Third and Final Part of Story

Cindy and John had been at HS3 for a little over three weeks. They had gotten a vaccine in production. And the results from Cindy's airborne tests were looking great. She had a team working on getting as many airborne vaccines produced as possible. She was planning having them set off in the nearby towns. It was only small scale at the moment, but she felt it was better than nothing. When she got to Location 1 she could get permission for a worldwide distribution. She knew an airborne vaccine would be much more easily distributed. That and she had designed it so that one person could be vaccinated and then spread the vaccine like a cold. It guaranteed more people would be receiving the vaccination. She just wanted to get this whole virus nightmare over with.

“Professor McGibbins to the front desk. Professor McGibbins to the front desk please” an intercommed voice said.

“What's that about?” John asked.

“I don't know, but I'll let you know when I get back,” Cindy answered.

“Want me to escort you there?”

Cindy shook her head no. She left the lab concerned about her being paged by her code name. She headed down the stairs towards the first floor.

Elijah, had been on the road for the last few days. He knew he looked unpresentable, but he didn't care. He was exhausted and just wanted to make sure Cindy was alive and safe before taking care of himself. The man at the desk was making it a bit hard though.

“I'm sorry sir, I can't just tell you who is at this facility. You need proof of being family or being sent to see anyone here,” the man said.

“Just tell me if she's okay,” Elijah said.

“Sire, I need some sort of documentation. You can't just waltz in here demanding to see someone. This is a hospital. People are sick and dying. We have rules here for their safety.”

Elijah sighed, “Is there somewhere I can at least wash up and get something to eat?”

“We have visitors quarters. If you fill out this form here, I'll have someone prepare one for you.”

Elijah reached out for the form. As he did so, the dolphin charm that he had tied to his wrist poked out of his sleeve. The man grabbed his arm. “Where did you get this?” he demanded.

“It was given to me by Cindy's niece, Nellie. I was told to give it to Cindy as soon as I saw her,” Elijah explained.

“Wait here,” the man said.

Elijah went and sat down to wait. The man paged a Professor McGibbins. Elijah wondered who this professor was. He looked around. The place had a sterile hospital feel to it. But it also had a homey feel. There were people chatting across from him. One was wearing a mask. Elijah guessed that the masked person had a virus. Even possibly the E76 virus. Even though Elijah knew he was immuned, it still made him nervous being around someone who could possibly have the virus.

He looked back towards the front desk. There was a girl there with her back to him, chatting to the man. For some reason, even though he could not see the girl's face, Elijah felt some sort of familarity with the her.

The man waved him over. And the girl turned around. “Sir this is Professor McGibbins, she will be escorting you to your quarters,” the man said. Elijah looked at the girl and realized why, despite the blond hair, she was so familiar.

“If you'll just follow me sir, I'll show you to your quarters,” she said and started walking slowly due to a cast on her leg. Elijah had no choice but to follow her, completely confused. She took him to a stair well and they started heading downwards. After a few flights, the girl stopped and turned to him, “We're entering the area where the secure quarters are. They're reserved for known Resistance members. You'll be staying there,” she said.

“But I'm not a Resistance member.”

“I know, but you are associated with one. It's for your protection as well as hers.”

“And she would be you Cindy,” Elijah said.

Cindy stopped and turned to him. “When you aren't on this floor, I am Professor McGibbins. You're lucky that Matt saw my necklace. He wouldn't have let you by otherwise. I've done a lot for the people here, so I hope you can forgive them for being protective. That necklace,” she pointed to his wrist, “is a trademark of mine. I take it you met my niece and nephew then.”

“Yes, she gave this to me,” Elijah responded, unwrapping the necklace from his wrist and placing it in Cindy's hand. He suddenly felt naked without it.

Cindy put the necklace on. It looked at home on her. She led him down a hall and stopped at a door. “These will be your quarters for now. Someone will be bringing your stuff to you and your vehicle will be hidden. Wash up, a meal will be brought to you and then you can get some rest. I'm sure you have questions and I promise answers tomorrow.” She left him and headed down the hall.

Elijah went into the room. It was like a small apartment. Only this one didn't have a kitchen. It resembled a small studio apartment. It had a bed in one corner, a sitting area, and a closed off area that was the bathroom. Elijah went in, showered, shaved. He felt more exhausted after washing. When he left his bathroom, he saw that his meal had been set up in the sitting area. He ate and then lay down on the bed.

He felt that he had only closed his eyes for a few moments when there was a knock on his door. Cindy let herself in. She looked around and saw the uneaten breakfast in the sitting area. “Afternoon,” she said.

Elijah looked at her, Cindy blushed a bit. He looked down and realized that he had slept in his briefs and only his briefs. “Sorry,” he said, grabbing a blanket to cover himself. Cindy turned her back to him. Elijah grabbed his clothes and started dressing. He noticed that they had been cleaned and his sack had been brought in. He found this a bit disturbing. “Dressed,” he said.

Cindy turned back around. “I thought you'd be awake by now,” Cindy said.

“Well, I spent a few days getting here. So I was just trying to catch up.”

Cindy nodded her understanding.

“So you ended up keeping your hair long after all?”

Cindy half smiled. It was a disagreement they had always had. He liked her hair long and she always cut it off. “Yeah, it kind of grew on me. Made the curls relax a bit.”

“But why blond?”

“Oh. That's not permanent. I dyed it when we were going to rescue you. A blond nurse isn't looked at in the face. If you know what I mean.”

Elijah understood. “So you're not keeping it that way?” Cindy shook her head. “Good. Blonds always scared me.”

“I know.”

“What happened to your leg?” Elijah asked pointing to the leg in the cast.

“Broke it while escaping IG Headquarters. I misjudged the distance I was trying to jump. It'll heal and it's the only injury between John and me.”

“Oh so John is here too?”

“Yes. He's upstairs in the lab right now. I'll take you there tomorrow if you'd like. Why are you here. I told you to stay safe and alive. Traveling all the way over here is hardly staying safe. And what if the IG had found you again?...”

“I was not going to sit idly by, while you were out somewhere. I didn't know if you were safe or not. Or even alive. No one was giving me any real answers. I only recently found out why you had me rescued.”

“Elijah, calm down,” Cindy said. She reached up and put both her hands on his shoulders. She made him sit down. “What did they tell you?”

Elijah related the whole story from the time he woke up in the compound to when he entered the doors of HS3. He left out the information that Dan had given him, and the fact that he knew more about her personal life (or lack thereof) than she would want anyone to know. Cindy sat there quietly, gnawing on her lower lip. Like she always did when she was listening or thinking intently. Elijah finished his story.

Cindy looked at him with tears glistening in her eyes. “Elijah, I am truly sorry for all this. I had kept you a secret from the Resistance because I had feared that they would put you into protective custody. I didn't want you to be forced into this. Though it happened anyways. I didn't think the IG would ever try to use you as bait. Else I would have had someone warn you so you'd be aware...”

“I understand, I do. I just don't know why you went after me, when you didn't go for your own family.”

Cindy's eyes filled with tears again. “We went for them before they were brought into custody. I had made arrangements for them to go into hiding as well. But they had other ideas. HS3 is actually the location of the hospital they had started for those who came down with the virus. They didn't want to leave all these people hanging. Even when I warned them that they could be used as bait, they refused to leave. My sister gave me her children, told me to keep them safe. And they all agreed that if they should be brought into custody, no one is to come and rescue them. They didn't want anyone to put themselves at risk. It was the hardest time knowing that they were being held at IG Headquarters and not doing anything. I got the reports on how they had died. My sister and her husband were executed. So were my uncles and their wives. My mother and grandparents were exposed to the virus and died slowly from its effects. I read it all in the report. They never gave any information as to where I was. I wasn't even able to bury them. The IG disposed of them the way they dispose of all the bodies of so-called traitors. When word came that they brought you in, I didn't want you to suffer the same fate. I didn't want another innocent person to die. Enough people have died in this war.” The tears begin to roll down her cheeks. “All this because people are fighting for power. You know how I feel about power.”

Elijah knew how she felt about power. When he had met her, she didn't care about how much he made, or what he owned. She seemed only interested in him. When he would offer to take her out, she always requested dinner at home. He never understood why. She never asked him for anything. It had made buying gifts for her a challenge.

He wanted to reach out and pull her close. He wanted to tell her that it was okay, just like he did when she had her nightmares. But he couldn't, Elijah just sat there, watching her stunned. In all the time they had spent together all those years ago, he had never seen her cry. He had never seen her show any true emotion. Not even anger. He had seen her face light up with a smile every once in awhile but he never knew what caused it. The only reason he had ever known how she felt was when she had given him a note that listed out every little thing about him that she liked. It was a long list.

“So that's why you had me rescued? Why didn't you send another team to do it? Why do it yourself?”

“Because I wanted to be sure you'd be safe. And I was going against the General's orders. The only team that would willingly follow my lead despite what the General decides was my own. We worked together before we had to go into hiding. They were people I knew I could trust to pull off any job correctly. And we did it. We got you out of there.”

“But one of your guys got killed, you and John were captured.”

“We each knew the risks going in.”

“And the chip you implanted in me. They could only access part of the data.”

“I know. It was the important stuff though.”

“What is the unaccessible stuff then?”

“More information that doesn't have the needed data to back it up.”

“And what are you doing here? Everyone thinks you are heading towards Location 1.”

A lady brought in lunch for the both of them and then quietly left. Cindy then answered Elijah's question. “I needed to know if the vaccine had been distributed. When I agreed to work for the Resistance it was with the understanding that I would only be there for as long as it took to make and distribute a vaccine. And to find a way to cure the virus. I have fulfilled part of that deal. I designed a vaccine to be distributed. I came here and found out that no one has received it yet. So I am making sure that happens. I have also designed an airborne vaccine that will make distribution even easier. People are dying. They need the vaccine now, not weeks from now.”

Elijah saw the passion in Cindy's eyes. He could hear it in her voice. The only other time she showed this kind of passion was when she was going on and on to him one night about some ideas she had for reversing genetic conditions. She had gotten even more excited when he had suggested her idea could be applied to the AIDS virus. She was thrilled for weeks over that discussion. “You have an airborne vaccine?” he asked.

“Yes. It just needs wide scale distribution. I wanted to start with the nearby cities before heading to Location 1. Then I can work on getting permission for wide scale. By then the vaccine will have spread itself. I designed it so that the vaccine could spread much like a cold does. It reduces the time it takes for a large population to get vaccinated.”

“Wow. You've really been working hard all these years.”

“Yes. Well, I had to. I couldn't sit by and let innocent people die. There are few hospitals that will take people with the virus. The risk of spread is too great. The Resistance just happens to run 10 in the world. I couldn't stand the idea of children becoming outcasts because of this.”

Elijah realized that he never put much thought into it. There were quarantine areas set up when people might have been exposed. If it was found that someone had the virus he was sent to a housing location far away from populated areas. He didn't consider that they might not be provided with proper medical facilities. Much less any other luxgeries that he was accustomed to.

Cindy continued, explaining how these people were left to fend for themselves. No deliveries were made to those secluded areas. The perimeters were heavily guarded. Only trucks of newly infected people were brought in.

Supper was brought in. Afterwards, Cindy left Elijah to his own thoughts. He felt the day had gone way to quickly. And he still hadn't asked Cindy all that he had wanted. She promised to be by again the following. Elijah, mentally went over everything that had been explained to him. His thoughts put him to sleep.

He was roused awake by Matt. “Wake up sir,” he said grabbing Elijah's clothes and tossing them on his bed. “Someone tipped off the IG that Cindy is here. Your vehicle is gassed up. I already loaded your sack. Your weapons are loaded and ready. Cindy and John are already up. You need to get them out of here.”

“What about you guys? And the vaccine?”

Matt tried to smile. “We'll be fine. Most of the people here have been infected by the virus. The lab where Cindy was having the vaccine produced has already been cleaned up and is disguised as a ward for those who are about to die. Most IG officials are so afraid of coming in contact with the virus that they won't search too hard. But they seem to know that we have secret quarters for you guys. I have staff trying to stall them for as long as possible. But you need to leave now.”

Elijah finished dressing. Grabbed his weapons and headed out the door. Cindy and John emerged from their separate quarters as well. A young boy was guiding them. “The garage is this way!” he called, pulling Cindy's arm. All three followed him. They emerged in the garage, Elijah's vehicle was waiting at the door already running. Elijah, jumped into the driver's seat. Cindy and John hopped in. As they were speeding out of the garage there was the sound of gunshot. Through the rear view mirror Elijah could see a look of shock on the boy's face as he fell to the ground. He glanced at Cindy, who was sitting beside him, and saw the look of horror on her face. “Look ahead,” he said, trying to direct her attention elsewhere. Elijah pulled the automatic, stretched behind him and handed it to John, “Use this if they try to fire at us.” John turned around to keep an eye on their pursuers. Elijah handed the handgun to Cindy. She merely nodded.

Elijah focused on getting rid of their pursuers. He drove into the nearby forest and focused on avoiding the trees. Shots behind them told him that they were still being followed. Elijah could hear John returning fire. At some point Cindy turned around and she started shooting as well. Suddenly, there was an explosion. Elijah felt himself flying through the air. He hit the ground and the air was momentarily knocked out of him. He looked over and saw that Cindy had already gotten to John. Elijah got up, grabbed one of the sacks and rushed over to John and Cindy.

John wasn't moving. Elijah looked and saw that John had been hit before the explosion. He wouldn't be getting up again. Cindy was still trying to revive John. Elijah gave Cindy a quick look over and saw that she was okay, except for a few scratches. “Cindy, he's gone,” Elijah tried explaining.

“No, he's just knocked out. The force from the blast just knocked the wind out of him...” Cindy responded.

Elijah was trying to be patient with Cindy, but he knew that their pursuers would be coming back around soon and checking the wreckage. He needed to get Cindy out of there. Elijah grabbed the hand gun from Cindy and put it in his sack. He grabbed Cindy's sack and the automatic. “Cindy, we need to leave now.”

“But, John...”

“There's nothing we can do for him.”

“But we have to at least bury him,” Cindy responded with tears glistening.

Elijah hated denying her request, but he felt that their lives were more important than the burial of a friend at the moment. He grabbed Cindy by the waist and practically dragged her away from John's body. After they got into the cover of the trees, Cindy began to stop fighting and walk a bit on her own despite the cast.

After over an hour of walking, Elijah and Cindy stopped for a break. He pulled out the tracker that Dan had given him. Elijah could see Conner's blue dot on the tracker, but he didn't know how far it was. He hoped that Conner would be moving towards them, thus cutting down on the time it would take to catch up.

“We should have buried him,” Cindy's words pierced Elijah's thoughts. “He was too good a friend to just leave like that.”

“When we get to help, we can come back and bury John properly,” Elijah tried consoling her. Again, he felt the urge to hold her close. And again, he didn't respond. He just got up and started checking the area out. “We should probably go for a couple more hours and then stop for the night,” Elijah suggested. Cindy just nodded.

Elijah was used to her preoccupied silences. Cindy was the type to only depend on herself. There were few times she had actually asked for his help or support. Elijah had blamed Cindy for pushing him away, for making him walk. Now he was starting to wonder if he had a part in it.

After their break, they continued walking. The next two hours were uneventful. Elijah found an area that provided some cover. The night was slightly chilly, but he didn't dare light a fire in fear of attracting patrols. Cindy didn't complain, so he assumed that she understood his reasoning.

The next morning, they had a quick meal of some bread and cheese that Matt had provided in their sacks. Elijah made a mental note that if they ever got out of this alive, he would have to thank Matt for saving their lives. He looked at the tracker. Conner's dot didn't seem to be getting any closer. It wasn't moving at all. Elijah felt a knot in the pit of his stomach. What if Conner's team had been ambushed? And the dot was just marking where Conner lay? Elijah tried to shake these thoughts out of his head.

He looked at Cindy. Though she was looking at him oddly, she did seem calmer. A little too calm for someone who had just witnessed a friend's death a day earlier. Elijah had to remind himself that Cindy was known for hiding her emotions. By the time she showed them, they were pretty intense. Intense, he thought. Every kiss, every hug, even when she had given him a list of what she liked about him. He had never thought about it, but they were her way of expressing something so intense that she couldn't put it into words. Elijah mentally kicked himself for realizing this eleven years later.

After their meal, Elijah and Cindy repacked their sacks and made sure there was no sign of them having stayed there. They then headed out.

“Did Dan give that to you?” Cindy nodded towards the tracker Elijah was carrying.

“Yeah, he said it was the only one that can track your chip. Figured it would be the easiest way for me to come find you without the Resistance interfering. Though we don't seem to be getting any closer to Conner.”

Cindy looked at the tracker, “That's because Conner is probably near Location 1. It's a ways away. We need to get to a safe house and get a vehicle.”

“Where's the nearest one?”

“About two days walk. If we keep heading that way,” Cindy pointed the direction, “we should get there by late evening tomorrow.”

The rest of the journey to the safe house was uneventful. Elijah and Cindy passed a lot of time in silence. Just in case patrols were out. When they did speak it was mostly to make sure they were still headed in the right direction. Elijah kept the automatic with him, hoping that he wouldn't have to use it. Cindy kept the handgun on her. Elijah never asked her if she had actually shot anyone while being in the Resistance. He really didn't want to know the answer to that. When they had been together, she was into forensic type shows, and true crime. Stuff that would make his stomach churn. But at the same time, Cindy hated anything that would cause people pain. Elijah had a hard time picturing Cindy making a death shot.

When they got to the safe house, Elijah and Cindy were able to be more relaxed. Cindy prepared the first hot meal that they had had in a few days. Elijah restocked their sacks with needed items. When he went to check on the vehicle though, he found that there was none. He commented on this to Cindy.

“Well, someone may have come here on foot and took the vehicle. Resistance members must not have come yet to make sure supplies are restocked.”

“How often do they come out?”

“Every couple of months, unless a member comes back and says he stopped at a safe house. Then someone is sent out to restock then.”

They agreed to spend a couple of days resting and then would head towards the next safe house in hopes of finding a vehicle there. Elijah didn't like the idea of Cindy walking on a broken leg. Even if it was in a cast. He wanted to get a vehicle as soon as possible.

The next couple of days were spent eating hot meals and catching up on the last eleven years. Elijah noticed that neither he nor Cindy mentioned their dating lives from the past eleven years. They did cover their careers, families, different living locations, the remainder of Cindy's grad school, and the Resistance.

As Elijah had suspected, Cindy didn't put her complete trust into the Resistance. While she was under their protection, Cindy and her team basically did their research without much interference from the Resistance. She had found ways around their forms of tracking, and was known for disobeying direct orders from the General.

“Once my work is done, I'm basically free game to both the IG and the Resistance,” she stated.

“So you don't plan on staying with the Resistance?”

“No, I told them when my help was requested that I would only stay on until both a vaccine and a cure was developed and distributed. I even made the General sign a contract stating to that fact.”

“And he was okay with that?”

“Surprisingly, yes. From what I hear, the General is pretty tough and isn't swayed easily. I'm not really sure why he agreed. Except for maybe the desperation for a cure.”

“Do you think that the Resistance will honour the contract?”

“I hope so. But if they don't, I have already considered the consequences if I stay and if I choose to escape. You know me, I can't handle being caged for long. I only agreed to this because I felt that the people's need was greater than my fear of loss of freedom.”

“And what is to become of me?”

“I hope that they will let you choose. A person should not be forced to choose a side in which he may not believe in.”

“Well, the IG conveniently made it so that I will not be able to be a neutral part of all this, and the Resistance coming to my rescue won't make it look any better.”

“I'm sorry about that. I had kept you a secret all this time in hopes that neither side would take you. I didn't know the IG would dig that far into my past to find bait. I am relieved that they didn't bring you in because of your immunity. It's still unknown who released the virus, so I didn't want to risk the chance of you falling into the wrong hands.”

“How did you find out about my having this gene?”

“We held several clinics to collect samples. I had requested someone to get a sample from you. I wanted to be sure you were virus free. I couldn't let you be sent to one of those “communities.” You can imagine my shock when I found out that you were completely immuned.”

Elijah felt a twinge of guilt. He had left her thinking that she did not care for him and for the past few years she had been protecting his identity from those that she perceived as a threat. She had risked her life to get him out of IG custody. He found himself wondering if she would have done that for anyone who had the gene.

After their respite, Elijah and Cindy started to head out to the next safe house in hopes that a vehicle would be there. Elijah wanted them to get to safety as soon as possible. And right now the Resistance provided that safety. And he didn't know how long that safety would last.

Elijah wondered how close Cindy was to a cure. For her, finding a cure meant freedom. He found himself wondering what it meant for him.

The first day of their journey was passed in silence. Elijah felt himself on constant alert for any sign of danger. He kept his hand on the automatic. He kept wondering if he'd really be able to shoot if the time came.

He had heard of Cindy's involvement with E1. He wondered if Cindy ever had to shoot anyone. He also began to wonder if the Elite squads had even started out as part of the Resistance. Since Cindy had stated that she didn't get involved with the Resistance until they had come to her about designing a vaccine and cure for the virus, he didn't think E1 was part of the Resistance till later. Which meant that her team had worked alone. Which would explain why her team worked so closely with Cindy in the labs. Elijah, made a mental note to ask Cindy about it all at the next safe house.

They had entered a clearing. Something about it made Elijah's hair stand on end. He quickly scanned the area and saw nothing unusual. He sensed Cindy tense up as well. They cautiously began to walk around the clearing in the protection of the trees. They had barely gotten halfway around when shots started ringing out. Both Elijah and Cindy dropped to the ground, hoping that the shooting wasn't directed towards them. Elijah kept the automatic close to him. He wasn't going to fail Dan this time. He would get Cindy back to safety. Elijah felt a lurch in his stomach when he heard shouts and patrols started to head towards them. He looked at Cindy and mouthed for her to run. They jumped up are started running into the trees. Elijah could hear the shouts and shots behind him. Up ahead he saw Cindy fall. Fearing the worst, he ran over to her. Elijah didn't have time to check her, a couple of the patrols had caught up. Without thinking, Elijah pulled up the automatic and started shooting. The two patrols fell.

“Did I hit them,” Elijah asked.

Cindy knew a death shot when she saw one. “I think they're merely wounded,” she answered hoping Elijah wouldn't check the area where the men fell.

“You've been hit,” Elijah pointed to the blood on Cindy's shoulder.

“It's okay. We'll get it taken care of at the safe house.”

Elijah and Cindy started heading towards the safe house once again. Elijah at first did not notice Cindy's limping. After a few hours, he realized that she was walking with difficulty. He knew she had been hit in the shoulder. That wound was bound up and her arm was in a sling to ease the pain. But her leg was still in a cast, and Elijah hadn't thought to ask Cindy if she had been hit anywhere else. When they stopped for the night, Elijah sat next to Cindy. “Let me look at your leg,” he said. Cindy sighed and replied, “Don't bother, the bullet went right through the cast.”

Elijah looked down and realized that the blood had been slowly collecting in her cast and was now beginning to come out. He had no idea how much blood Cindy had lost, or how she had managed to keep walking for so long. “God, Cindy why didn't you tell me?”

“Because we needed to get out of there.”

“I'm going to have to remove the cast and see how bad it is.”

Cindy looked at him. “I know,” she said.

Elijah could still see her brown eyes in the fading sunlight. He saw the pain and knew that he had to do something, anything to help her. Elijah carefully removed the cast from Cindy's leg. It was hard work since he didn't have the proper tools. He had to force his stomach to calm down once he had removed the cast. Cindy's leg was a mess. Elijah then bound up her leg, hoping to at least stop the bleeding for the time being.

He knew she was at risk for infection, which meant all the more reason to get to the safe house as quickly as possible. But there was no way, Elijah was going to make Cindy walk on that leg. He considered the possibility of carrying her. She was never that heavy. But it would still slow down their traveling considerably.

Cindy slept while Elijah stayed awake, keeping watch and considering their options. By the following morning, he had lashed together a way to transport Cindy. It would definitely slow down their travel time, but Elijah felt that it would minimize anymore possible damage. It took a lot of convincing for him to get Cindy to agree to be dragged around on the thing. But in the end she relented.

From what Cindy had told him, the next safe house was about a week's walk away from the previous one that they had been at. Elijah knew that with Cindy being wounded, the time to get there was greatly increased. The first few days of dragging Cindy along went without incident. But over time, Elijah noticed that Cindy was getting feverish. Her shoulder wound and the wound on her leg began to feel warm to the touch. Elijah began to worry that they weren't going to make it to the safe house. He did his best not to show his worry to Cindy. He knew that keeping her calm was the only thing he had any control of at the moment. Elijah, did notice on the tracker that Conner's dot was on the move again. This time towards them. Elijah still had no idea how long it would take to catch up with them though.

As the days past, Cindy's fever grew worse and she seemed to be having hallucinations. Elijah would make several stops and applied wet cloths to Cindy's forehead in hopes that it would provide her with some relief. He had no idea which direction the safe house was. Elijah followed the tracker towards Conner hoping that at some point they would find a safe house.

During one of Elijah's stops for the night, he heard Cindy moaning. He rushed to her side. “Cindy, I'm right here. Are you okay? Cindy?”

Cindy reached up and grabbed Elijah's hand, just like she used to do to him when something scared her. He could see the fear and pain in her eyes. “Elijah, make sure that the vaccine gets out to everyone. Both sides need it. And tell Lucy that everything she needs is on the disk.”

“Cindy, you'll be telling Lucy that yourself. We'll make it to help in plenty of time for you to make sure the vaccine is distributed to the people.”

“But if I don't make it Elijah...”

“You have to, you're the only one who has complete access to the chip.”

“No, Elijah. You always had access.”

“But, you never gave me the pass code.”

“Because I chose a code that only you would know, or think of.”

“Cindy, what is the pass code?”

Cindy closed her eyes to push back the pain. Elijah saw a small tear escape. “Ender,” she responded, “Ender.” Cindy drifted into a sleep.

Elijah sat back, still holding her hand. He half smiled over the information that he had just received. He knew exactly what Cindy meant. She had chosen something that only he had known. When he had left, Cindy had told him that she loved him. It was the only time she had ever said those words to him. And he had felt like she didn't mean it. That it was just a desperate attempt to keep him. But now he thought different. Cindy had loved him. Maybe she hadn't shown it in a way he had expected. But she had. And now she lay there dying. Elijah had no idea how he was going to get her to safety. He only knew he had to. He had spent the last eleven years without her, he wasn't planning on going another eleven.

The week passed much like that night. Cindy would slide in and out of consciousness. Her fever seemed to be worsening. Elijah carried both weapons on him, in case Cindy hit a point where she saw him as an enemy. He was tired from so little sleep. Every noise awoke him and he would quickly reach for the automatic. He didn't relish the idea of patrols managing to sneak up them.

On one such night, Elijah had awoken. He looked around for what could have caused the noise that had woke him up. He was about to go back to sleep when he had heard the noise again. It wasn't the sound of the normal forest nightlife that Elijah had grown so accustomed to. He heard faint whispering. He grabbed the automatic and quickly checked on Cindy. She was still unconscious. Elijah made sure she was concealed and then crouched down beside a large log. He pulled out the hand gun and screwed on a silencer. His eyes had already adjusted to the darkness. He looked towards the sounds of movement. Elijah could make out the figures of three men. They were definitely wearing IG patrol uniforms. He didn't know how many more were out there.

Elijah stayed silent, barely breathing. Hoping not to attract the attention of the patrols. He tried to will them to go on their way. To not come and investigate the brush area. To Elijah's dismay, one of the patrols headed in his direction. The patrol stopped and beckoned the other two to his location. They held a hushed conversation and then started heading back in the direction they had come from. Elijah sat back and then sighed relief.

His relief was premature. Cindy starting moaning in her sleep. Elijah looked over the log. The three patrols stopped and started heading towards them. Elijah knew that he could probably take the three down if needed. He just hoped that no other patrols were nearby.

The three patrols closed in. When one got close enough, Elijah fired. The man fell. The other two patrols pulled out their guns and aimed towards where they thought the shot came from. Elijah fired again bringing other one down. The last one began firing in Elijah's direction. He had to duck behind the log again. As soon as there was a break, he got up and fired once more bringing the last guy down.

When he went to check their bodies, Elijah noticed one was wearing a communicator. A voice was asking for the men to report. Elijah lifted Cindy up and began to run. After some time, he hear other patrols behind them. Elijah's lungs felt like they would burst. Suddenly, up a head shots fired. He ducked into some brush to avoid the shots. The patrols ran past them. Elijah could still hear the shots. He then saw the patrols coming back, shooting at something. They were shouting orders. It seemed like total chaos. It was over as soon as it started. The group that was shooting at the patrols came into view. Elijah kept himself and Cindy hidden in the brush. He couldn't make out who these people were. Then he heard a familiar voice. “Mike, move those bodies to the brush over there. Make sure they're well covered. Want it to take some time before patrols find them. Hopefully, by then we'll have Cindy back.”

“Yes, Sir.”

Elijah felt complete relief wash over him. “Conner, we're over here. Cindy's been wounded,” he shouted.

Conner ran over to Elijah's location. “My god, Elijah. Were you what the patrols were after? How long have you two been out here?” To another man in the unit, he shouted, “Call Location 1, tell them we need an aircraft immediately. Give them our position.”

While they waited for the aircraft to arrive, Elijah was given food and drink. He was exhausted, but he refused sleep. He wanted to be sure that Cindy would be fine before attending to any of his other needs.

The flight to Location 1 seemed quick in comparison to how long Elijah had been traveling on foot. When they landed, Cindy was rushed to a hospital unit. Dan and Lucy were waiting for Elijah. They refused to let Elijah go to the unit with Cindy until he got some rest. Elijah lay down in his quarters and was asleep before another thought hit his mind.

A loud knock awoke him. Lucy entered.

“How long have I been asleep?” Elijah asked.

“A couple of days.”

“A couple of days! What about Cindy? Is she awake? Is she okay?”

Lucy smiled. “Cindy is still sleeping. Doctors don't know when she'll awake. They were able to save both her leg and arm. Her fever is slowly going down. But she is still healing.”

“Then I should go. I should be there when she wakes up.”

Lucy nodded at Elijah. “Yes, I think you should. But right now, you should shower. Wash up and eat. You're no good to her if you become ill yourself. Dan is sitting with her now. You can relieve him when you are presentable.”

Elijah was impatient to get to Cindy, but he understood Lucy's reasoning. When Lucy left him, he went to the bathroom and looked into the mirror. He looked worse than when Cindy's team had rescued him. “Some hero, I am,” he said to himself, “I go to rescue the girl. She ends up getting shot, and I end up getting lost in the woods.” Elijah showered, he noticed clean clothes waiting for him. After he dressed, he ate. He was about to head to the hospital unit when he realized that he did not know the location of it.

After a bit there was a knock at his door. Lucy had returned. “I see you're ready to go see Cindy now. I'll escort you there.”

When Elijah got to Cindy, he felt relieved to see her resting in a bed. Dan was sitting there, keeping watch. He saw Elijah. “You got her back. Now all we can do is wait.”

“I'm sorry.”

“Don't be. I asked you to find my sister and you did.”

“But she got wounded.”

“And you kept her alive long enough to get her to safety. You didn't abandon her, or leave her for dead. And I'm sure you put yourself at risk on your way here.”

Elijah didn't respond. He merely sat by Cindy's side and clasped her hand in his.

Lucy nodded to Dan. Dan got up and left the room followed by Lucy.

The next few days were filled with waiting. While the doctors had been able to save Cindy's arm and leg. They still didn't know how long they were saved for. The damage was severe. When Cindy would wake was unknown. The only good news was that her fever was going down. After a few days there, Elijah remembered what Cindy had told him. When Lucy came to visit, he handed her the chip, “I know the pass code for complete access,” he said.

“You hang on to it. I'll bring the computer. You should never give the code out.”

Lucy left. A while later she returned with her small computer. She inserted the chip inside and handed the computer to Elijah. He typed in the code. As before, the pictures melted and data appeared. But this data looked different. He handed the computer to Lucy. She looked at the data.

“My god,” she said and smiled. “Cindy did it. She really did it.”

“She did what?”

“She developed an airborne vaccine. And it works. And she had trials going for a cure. I'll have to wait for the trial data to come in. But she did it.” Lucy was excited.

Elijah looked at Cindy and knew what the excitement was about. The cure would not only mean freedom from the virus, but freedom for Cindy's team. They had endured half a decade of glamorous imprisonment.

Lucy left to get preparations ready for the vaccines to be distributed and to evaluate all of Cindy's data. Elijah was alone with Cindy once again.

He wasn't sure how long he had been asleep. But he woke up with his head on Cindy's bed. Elijah sensed that someone else was in the room. He looked up and saw Matt.

“Sir. You can imagine my relief when I had heard that you and Cindy had made it to safety. We had sent search teams after you guys and when we found the vehicle and John's body, we feared the worst.”

Elijah nodded.

“I had this made for you.” Matt handed Elijah a small wooden dolphin on a cord. “Now you will always be welcomed at HS3.” He saw the questioning look in Elijah's face. “Doctor Wood means a lot to us. What she and her family have done is more than can ever be repaid. When she awakes, tell her that we gave John a proper burial. And that the boy is with his parents.”

“So the boy survived?”

“No. He was an orphan. We house many of them until Location 1 can send a transport to retrieve them. The boy's parents were victims of the virus. Cindy gave them the greatest gift possible. She vaccinated the boy so that the parents could spend their remaining time with him without the barriers. They were able to be a family once more. By that simple gift, Cindy had earned the boy's unwavering loyalty. Now the boy rests next to his parents.”

“I will be sure to tell her.”

Matt nodded. He began to leave. When he reached the door he turned to Elijah, “HS3 serves neither the Resistance or the IG. We only serve the people. If you are ever in danger, come to us we will provide you with safety.” He then left.

“I'm telling you. The data, it's all complete. The trials for the cure were a success. I've already arranged for the production and distribution of it. The virus will no longer be a threat.” Lucy was in Cindy's room explaining it to Dan and Elijah. She was excited. “I know it's not an end to the war. But it means less people will be dying. It will take some time to get everyone, and we'll have to send people into the viral communities. And we don't even know what we'll find there. But it's over. For us it's finally over.”

Elijah grabbed Cindy's hand. Her eyes started fluttering open.

“So that's the end of your report Conner?” the General asked.

“Yes, sir. The vaccine has been distributed, the cure is being sent out. Cindy and Elijah left as soon as she was well enough to travel. They took Michael with them.”

“Where did they go?”

“I don't know. They left me the name of a contact if they were needed, but not their own location.”

“I guess she thought of everything. What of Nellie?”

“Nellie has begun her combat training. Cindy could not keep her away forever.”

“Good. The girl will make a good captain. She has leadership written all over her. What of the rest of Cindy's team?”

“Dan and Lucy have taken Gina and left. They said that they will only return if Cindy is ever needed. Alice went on a mission to distribute the vaccine. Her aircraft went down. Everyone was recovered except for her. Not even her body was found, sir.”

“Thank you Conner. I have evaluated your sister's request to transfer to Location 1. I will grant it. And you and your family have been granted the holidays there as requested.”

“Thank you sir. May I ask a question of you sir?”

“Go on Conner.”

“You could have Cindy tracked down. She's a valuable scientist to have around. And Dan is your son. Are you going to have him traced?”

The General smiled. “I could yes. But to do that would be a violation of her contract. And even if I hadn't sign it, I would still have had to let her go. Cindy is the type who earns people's unwavering loyalty. And by sending out the vaccine and the cure she has increased that following by over a thousand fold. To double cross someone like that, would be asking for trouble. Cindy has the power to start her own army against both us and the IG and she would win. Did Elijah tell you why he chose to go with Cindy?”

“He just said that he found something worth dying for.”

“Good for them. Someone should have some happiness during times like these. You are dismissed Conner.”

After Conner left the room, the General smiled. “Good for her. Good for her.” he said.

War Torn Hearts Part 2

There was a knock at his door and a young lady came in to set his dinner at the table. She was followed by Nellie.

“I hear you and Uncle Dan had some words this afternoon,” Nellie said as she plopped down on the couch next to Elijah's feet.

“I wouldn't call it words,” Elijah said. “You've seemed to make yourself at home.”

Nellie blushed a little. “This was supposed to be Auntie's quarters when she went into hiding. Quarters were arranged for our whole family.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, the quarters we live in now had been set up for my mom, dad, Michael and me. Auntie had made arrangements for the whole family to be here, but they had other ideas. They felt that they were of better use where they were. Mom had Auntie take my brother and me. It was hard for awhile, realizing that they weren't coming back. I mean try, explaining to a five and ten year that their parents are dead. Have to admit that Auntie has done her best. I think sometimes she tries to shield us from the war. She doesn't want us involved in it. I've been trying to convince her to let me go into combat training for a while now. She always says that children should not fight in a war that their parents start. She's always telling me that you know the right path when you're willing to die for it. She said that our family was willing to die for the people and to protect us. Is there something out there that you're willing to die for?”

Elijah looked at Nellie. He couldn't give her an answer. He had never felt conviction so strong that he would die for it. He shook his head. “No I haven't,” he said sullenly.

“Oh,” Nellie said surprised. “Auntie keeps telling me not to choose a path just because I think it's expected of me. But I want to go. Families shouldn't be torn apart like this. I mean we aren't the only ones. Uncle John lost his wife. She was taken into custody by the IG and was executed before the Resistance could rescue her. And Aunt Cindy rarely talks about our family. I think it hurts her too much to talk about it. I mean, she never mentioned you to us. And the rumor is that you're the last person she dated. She's always trying to appear strong to us, but no one can be that strong all the time. It has to be exhausting.

“Well, I should get going. I've probably more than talked your ear off and I promised Aunt Lucy that Michael and I would have dinner with her family. I hope you have a good evening. And if I don't see you before you leave, please tell my Aunt that Michael and I miss her. And give this to her.” Nellie grabbed Elijah's hand and put something in it. “She always wears it in the compound. She left it behind in case someone on the outside recognized it.”

Elijah nodded. Nellie got up and let herself out of the unit. When she was gone, he opened his hand. It was the cord necklace with a blue ceramic dolphin tied on. He shoved it in his pocket and went to eat his supper.

The next couple of days went quickly. Conner showed up at Elijah's quarters and escorted him out of Section 8. They followed the long halls through the compound till they got to an area that was significantly cooler than the rest of the compound. Conner stopped outside a door. “You might want to put this on,” he said handing Elijah a jacket. Conner typed a code on the key pad and the door opened, sending a blast of icy air towards them. They walked through the door into what looked like a large garage and airline hanger combined into one. Elijah was amazed by the amount of vehicles he saw in the room.

“We're over here,” Conner said pointing in the direction of what looked like an IG aircraft. “We have to disguise our vehicles to avoid suspicion, and to avoid being searched every five miles. When we get to our location, we'll have a road vehicle to go search for Cindy and John. We'll be in the cargo hold. Unfortunately, I can't let you look out since you still don't have the clearance to know our true location. Or the location of where we're going.”

Elijah nodded his understanding. He felt that it was a small price to pay for the answers that he had been seeking since before he was brought in almost six months ago.

The flight was long and was passed mostly in silence. Elijah found himself napping for most of the trip. Sleep, it was something he had always said was a waste of time. He wondered what Cindy would say if she caught him taking a nap.

“I'm okay John. My leg just hurts a little that's all.” John and Cindy had managed to escape IG Headquarters with a little help from the inside. One of the Preacher's guards was actually a spy for the Resistance. He helped them plan their escape and managed to keep most of the guards occupied. Unfortunately, part of the escape involved scaling a wall. Cindy had jumped from a height that she had thought was safe and was now limping as her and John traveled through the forest.

John looked at Cindy in way that told her that he did not believe her. They were only one more day away from one of the safe houses. They would be able to rest, get supplies, and treat any injuries there. Cindy hoped that they wouldn't hit anymore trouble on the way there. She doubted she could run on her leg, and had a bad feeling that she had broken or at least twisted something. She and John kept walking, taking several breaks due to Cindy's leg. They discussed the last couple of months in IG custody. The IG had first tried interregating them. But that seemed to die down. Blood samples were taken. Cindy breathed a sigh of relief over the fact that she had rigged the vaccine to be untraceable in the blood stream. Even her markers weren't traceable unless someone knew to look for them.

They were subjected to what she considered attempted brain washing. The Preacher met with both of them alone each day and went on for what felt like hours about how it was a religious war being fought. And if they didn't join the IG their souls would burn in Hell for eternity. Cindy felt pity for the Preacher. He was delusioned into believing what he said. When she was younger she used to fight with him on the subject of religion. She rebelled against being a minister's daughter, just as her mother had rebelled against being a minister's wife. She admitted to herself that she had chosen to study science just to spite him. But when she found she had a talent, she couldn't leave. Her college education became a topic of argument between her and and father until long after she earned her doctorate. Then it was turned to her lack of marrying. She never told anyone the real reason why she never settled down. She just gave plausible excuses.

“I have been wondering all this time,” John started when they stopped for a break, “why was it that you wanted to go after Elijah. I know you said he was an old boyfriend and that he hadn't chosen a side yet. But anyone could have been sent on that mission. Why us? Why didn't you just go to the General and ask him for help. And why after eleven years, you haven't even mentioned the guy's name, did you risk your life for him. I know you have the vaccine now, but you're still an important asset to the Resistance. We're supposed to find a cure for the virus as well. Or have you forgotten that point?”

Cindy looked at John. They had been friends since they were in grade school. There wasn't much she hid from him. And keeping her reason for having Elijah rescued to herself was a difficult choice to make. She sighed and replied, “Elijah's more valuable than even I am to the Resistance. With him in IG custody, it would have been only a matter of time before the vaccine would be useless, and use designing a cure would be that much more harder. They would have killed him.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Elijah's DNA was the template I used for the vaccine. He has a gene that makes him immune to the virus.”

“How did you get his DNA?”

“When we were sending people out to collect samples from random people. Holding mock clinics and such. I sent someone to get a sample from Elijah. I wanted to be sure he was safe and virus free. I didn't expect to find out that he would help provide the vaccine. And I hope part of the cure.”

“And you didn't even think to tell me?”

“I wanted to. But you know our work was being watched for such a long time. I needed to prevent leaks. If the General had gotten word about Elijah, he would have ordered Elijah brought in. The poor guy wouldn't have had a choice. He would then hate the Resistance and believe that the IG is doing the right thing. I wanted Elijah to be able to make the choice on his own.”

“But you basically made the choice for him. By having him rescued and sent to the Resistance. They will keep him in lockup until they know for sure that he isn't a threat. And since you hid the information about him being immune, they won't know until we get back.”

“Oh they know by now. I injected my data chip into him right before we were captured. Alice will have accessed the information by now. The General will keep Elijah under protection. I didn't want it to happen this way. But the IG would have killed him. Then the information of who he is might leak and whomever designed the virus would have mutated it making it harder to control. I couldn't have that. I'm not in the business of killing.”

John sighed and looked at her. He wanted to be mad at her for not telling him why they had put themselves at risk to save Elijah. But he couldn't. These were times of suspicion, and while they had been through everything together. He knew that the less people who had known about Elijah, the safer he had been. Cindy was not one to put people at risk for no apparent reason. She valued Life too much for that.

The day passed slowly. By the time they had made it to the safe house, both Cindy and John were extremely exhausted. And Cindy was in visible pain from her leg. John pulled up the keypad to the door and entered his code. The door opened and they both entered. The place looked like it hadn't been used in a while, but it was safe. Cindy sat down in a chair while John went looking for medical supplies. He knew that despite Cindy stated that she was okay, her leg was most likely broken. He needed to set it. When John found the needed supplies he returned to Cindy.

He started feeling her leg and found where the break was. He started talking to her about Elijah. Hoping that it would distract her while he set her leg. “So which boyfriend was Elijah?” he asked.

“Remember when I called you upset because the cake I tried making for his birthday was a disaster.”

John nodded.

“I kept trying for over a week trying to perfect that chocolate cake recipe. I wanted to surprise him with one for his birthday. But no matter what I tried, it just wouldn't turn out right. He had this thing for chocolate cake. Whenever we went out he would order this amazing cake and request extra fudge sauce. It just tasted wonderful. We would be so high on chocolate after that.”

John smirked.

Cindy winced with pain. “He was the one I made the hat and scarves for. He was the only boyfriend I actually sat down to make a gift for.”

“Well, if that doesn't say love, I don't know what does.”

“He was a great cook. I would always suggest that we eat in because I loved his cooking so much. He'd wake me up when I was having nightmares. I thought I was the luckiest girl on the planet when I was with him.”

“What caused the break?”

“I was in school, and he worked. Thing is with school, your day isn't over after eight hours. There's homework and projects. He never complained, so I thought things were fine. But I guess he had felt neglected. The day he left was one of the hardest days in my life. He just said “Goodbye” and completely cut me out of his life. I did try asking for a second chance, but he refused. That's when I decided to focus on finishing my doctorate without any distractions.”

“I'm sorry I wasn't there for you.”

“John, we were accepted in different programs. I couldn't have expected you to be there to bail me out of every troublesome event in my life. Besides, that was over eleven years ago. I've adjusted.”

“Well, your leg is set. We'll stay here for a few days. There should be a vehicle in the underground compartment. We'll use that to get to Location 1. As for now, I'll get us something to eat. It's a good thing the Resistance keeps these houses well stocked.”

There was a vast supply of canned goods stored in the house. John made them a meal of some pasta with red sauce, and green beans. Cindy fell asleep while he did the dishes. He hated the fact that she acted so independently. And while that independent spirit had gotten her where she was, John couldn't help but wonder how many great things she had missed out on because of it. He found himself hoping that someone will be able to tame that spirit of hers. Eleven years ago, he had hoped that it was Elijah who would be able to tame her. He was wrong. After Elijah left, Cindy just became even more independent spirited and more stubborn than before.

They spent three days in the safe house. The vehicle in the compartment looked like an IG vehicle, which meant less stops for them. And it was fully gassed up. It would cut their travel time down by more than half. John had a feeling though that Cindy had other plans than going straight to Location 1. He knew she wouldn't tell him till the last minute, so he found himself packing more supplies than a trip to Location 1 would require. John also knew that whatever Cindy was planning, it had to do with the vaccine. They had lost two months of being in the know at the Resistance, which meant that Cindy would be wanting to know if the vaccine was being distributed. And if it wasn't, he had a feeling Location 1 would have to wait.

On the day they decided to leave, John approached Cindy. “If I'm going to be doing the driving, I need to be let in on your plan. Where are we to be heading once we leave the safe house?”

Cindy pulled the map from her bag. “I need to check on a few places before we go to Location 1. But you already knew that I wasn't planning on going there right away. We are only a couple of days away from HS3. I need to see if the vaccination has been distributed yet and if not, we need to get started on that. It can't wait,” Cindy replied.

“But your leg needs proper attention. I've set it for now, but it needs to be checked.”

“You know that HS3 is a hospital location. They'll have everything we need for a broken leg. And they'll be able to inform me if the vaccine is out. If it's not, they'll have the supplies needed to get it out,” Cindy responded.

John finished loading their stuff into the vehicle. “You know I'll take you to where you need to go. Since the vaccine is so important, we'll go to HS3.”

“Thanks.”

Cindy and John headed off towards HS3.

“Where here.” Conner shook Elijah awake.

Elijah opened his eyes. He got up and stretched a bit, then followed Conner out of the aircraft. They walked into another hanger very similar to the last one he had been in. But this one was much warmer than the one at the Compound. Elijah, guessed that they must be at a location with a much warmer climate.

“This is one of the few locations where the residents have access to the outdoors,” Conner explained. “We even send our children here for a sort of boarding school. You'll get to see a bit of it before we head out.”

“I thought we were here to get Cindy.”

“Well, this is the place she'll be headed. But since we don't know if she or John is injured, we're going to head out and see if we can catch up with them. A team will be left here in case she chooses a different route than ours.”

They met up with a guy who looked like he was in charge there. Conner and he held a hushed conversation. When they were done, Conner turned back towards Elijah, “Our quarters have been prepared for us. We'll head there to wait for the rest of our team to show up.”

Elijah, had given up on asking questions by then. He had thought that the whole rescue team was already there. He didn't know who else they would be waiting for. But since most of his questions remained unanswered, he just nodded and followed his brother to their assigned quarters.

The next few days passed quickly. Elijah, was able to go outside for the first time in months. He was right about the warm climate. They were in some sort of jungle area. According to Conner they were located in what used to be Mexico. The few days gave Elijah time to catch up with his brother. He had found out that their sister, Jeanne, and her husband were still safely part of the Resistance. They both had taken on the responsibility of being teachers for the children in the Compound. Their mother was there in Location 1. Conner had made arrangements for them to have supper with her their first night there. It was an emotional reunion. Elijah was not prepared for the amount of emotion he felt when he saw his mother. She was apparently in charge of the children whose parents were lost in the war.

During their third night at Location 1, Conner came in. “The final member of our crew just came in. He'll be joining us in our quarters for a briefing in half an hour,” Conner said and then walked back out.

Elijah felt relieved. He wanted to get this mission over with. And he was also curious as to who this final group member was supposed to be. He ended up passing the next 30 minutes pacing around the quarters.

When it was time Conner came in. Five minutes later there was a knock and Dan and Lucy entered. “Sorry about being late, traveling with a child has it's own obstacles,” Dan replied.

Elijah was about to comment about Dan being there only out of residual feelings for Cindy, but Conner cleared his throat to signal that he was about to talk.

“I hope you found the lab here to your liking,” Conner said to Lucy. Lucy nodded her approval. “You ready for this?” He asked Dan. Dan nodded. “We'll be living in two days. You will be bunking with Elijah and me. Do you have any way of tracking her or do we have to do it the old fashioned way?”

“As far as I know, I don't have any easy way of tracking her or John,” Dan answered.

“What about the data chips that Lucy said you all carry. Can't you track her with that?” Elijah asked.

“Cindy put her chip in you. And even if she hadn't, it wouldn't do us much good. She never had a tracking mechanism in it. Neither did John. It's a choice for scientists, they don't have to have trackers, everyone else does,” Dan explained.

“Okay then, I'll have one of our guys map out all possible routes Cindy could be taking to get here. We'll split up and follow the most likely ones. Hopefully, we'll catch up to her before she gets into any real danger,” Conner said.

The meeting was adjorned. Conner and Dan left to go over maps. Lucy stayed behind a bit. “I take it from your expression that Conner didn't tell you we were coming? I know you don't like Dan, because you think something happened between him and Cindy.” Elijah opened his mouth to argue but Lucy kept going. “I thought the same thing when I first met them. Dan was already working in the computer lab downstairs of the building I was in when Cindy first showed up. She had just gotten her doctorate and I thought she would be another one of those pompous new grads. She wasn't. She listened intently to what even the techs had to say. And when she presented her idea for a new route to try for a cure to Doctors McAffee and Pierson, she didn't take the credit for herself. She said it was suggested by some old boyfriend. She didn't even take credit when it turned out to be the key we were looking for. She gave credit to our whole team when she did the press interview telling the world that AIDS was no longer a threat. During the time of our research, her and Dan used to meet up during breaks. I used to watch envious. Then one day she dragged me over to met the guy. You can imagine my relief when she said he was a friend. Dan and I have been married for almost seven years now. And have never doubted his fidelity. I take it you didn't know,” Lucy said when she saw the look of shock on Elijah's face. She smiled. And gave Elijah a pat on the shoulder. She left the room.

“What do you mean, you haven't heard about the vaccination being sent out?” Cindy almost yelled. Her and John had gotten there a few hours prior. At John's insistence Cindy agreed to have her leg taken care of first. The man on the other side of the desk flinched. Cindy might have been a petite woman, but she was not a person to disappoint. Cindy took a deep breath. “Okay, I figured this would happen. Do you have a lab free?” The man nodded. “Good, then John and I will need full use of it and any staff you can spare,” Cindy said. “You can find me or John in our quarters when preparations have been made.”

Cindy and John walked out of the man's office. “Why do we need a lab?” John asked her.

“We need a lab to start producing the vaccine. We also need to get to work on the airborne vaccine,” Cindy replied.

“But you put your data chip in Elijah's shoulder,” John stated.

“I did, but I kept a copy. Thought I might need a backup. Good thing I did.” They reached Cindy's quarters and parted for the evening.

The following day, Cindy and John were showed to their new lab. They met the people who would be helping them. Cindy brought up the data she had on her chip and got most of them synthesizing a new vaccine. She dismissed the others for the day. “Why'd you do that,” John asked her.

“Because of this,” Cindy responded pointed to the computer screen. Data was registering on there at a rapid rate. “I had sent out trial samples of an airborne vaccine. All the data from the subjects' chips over the past three months are uploading into this computer and copying onto my chip. We need to go over all the data. If it checks out, the rest of this group will be synthesizing the new vaccine. Then we can arrange to have it distributed on a world wide scale.”

“You mean, you already had an airborne vaccine?” John said.

“It was still in trial. The shot finished trials much more quickly. I had hoped that while we were gone, the Resistance would have distributed the vaccine. We need to get it out there, and then I'm going to go find out why it wasn't sent out in the first place.”

The day was spent mostly with Cindy and John going over all the data from the airborne trials. It looked promising, but Cindy wanted to be sure. So they both went over the results till late in the evening.

Elijah, Conner and Dan had been on the road for a week. They had stopped at the safe house nearest IG Headquarters. There were signs that Cindy and John had been there. John's emergency pass code was logged in the keypad file. Medical supplies were missing, so was a good portion of the food and the vehicle. “Well, one of them must be wounded, how bad we don't know. So we don't know if it will slow them down, but it's very likely that they will try to head straight for Location 1. We'll follow the straight route, and I'll send Richard's group on the zig zag,” Conner said.

“Are you sure they'll head straight for Location 1? There aren't any hospital locations nearby?” Elijah asked.

“There's one but it's two days drive out of the way. The next safe house is a day away if they walked. And the hospital location is mostly used for those who are infected with the virus. They would be taking a risk of contracting the virus if they went there.”

“But you said Cindy had designed a vaccine,” Elijah commented.

“She did come up with a vaccine, and E1 says they each received it. But we have no real record of it as of yet. And we haven't put it into mass production yet. I highly doubt Cindy would take the risk,” Conner said. “We'll stay here tonight and head to the next safe house in the morning.”

Dan left the room to seek out supplies and gas for their vehicle.

“If you're just a bodyguard, how do you know so much about tracking someone. And how can you command a whole group of people without them questioning your authority,” Elijah asked.

Conner looked at his brother sighed and responded, “Because I'm not a bodyguard. I was for a while but then it was decided that I would be of greater service as a spy. I brought back the news that Cindy had been captured, before Dan brought you back. A fellow spy at IG Headquarters arranged for her to escape. We're used to having to switch from lifestyle to lifestyle, depending on our assignment.”

“Does...”

“Lena know, yes. And it worries her every time I'm away. She's afraid there will be a time when I won't be coming back.”

Now Elijah understood the look of relief on Lena's face the first time he saw her. She hadn't seen her husband in quite some time and him in her presence let her know that he was alive and safe. Elijah figured that these separations were torture for Lena, though she never let on in his presence. She was a true spy's wife.

The next morning they packed up. And headed out to the next safe house. It only took them a couple of hours to get there by vehicle. There was no sign of Cindy and John along the way. And when they got to the safe house, there was no record of Cindy's nor John's emergency codes on file. No sign of them in the house either. The safe house vehicle was still there. Conner explained, “If Cindy and John had stopped at this safe house, they would have exchanged the previous safe house vehicle for the next. It helps keep the IG from tracking the one vehicle, and guarantees a gassed up and functioning vehicle for quick getaways. Since they haven't been here, let's head to the next safe house. We'll stay there for the night. Hopefully, there will be some sign of Cindy and John there.”

After a quick lunch the team loaded up and headed to the next safe house. There was no sign of Cindy and John there either. Connor stepped out to discuss options with other members of his team, leaving Dan and Elijah alone in the cabin.

“So you and Cindy never tried hooking up after I left?”

“No. Neither one of us had feelings like that for one another.”

“But you have feelings for her?”

“Yes, but it's complicated.”

“How is it complicated. You have feelings for her, sure you're married now but that's never stopped anyone.”

“Well for one, I love my wife and daughter. Second, she doesn't have feelings for me. And third, she's family.”

“Yeah but she's not blood family.”

“Actually, Cindy is. She's my sister. I know she's only a couple of months younger than me. Parents make mistakes. Cindy was my dad's mistake. He was away on business, met Cindy's mom. My mother knows about her. And they didn't tell me till I was in college. Cindy and I met and hung out a lot.”

“Yeah I know that.”

“It felt like hanging out with the little sister I never had. I mean, there were guys who liked her and she went out. But she always ended up at my place, going over dates, playing video games, or watching movies. She felt like family even then. Well, my parents were afraid things would go too far. So they pulled me aside one day and told me the truth.”

“And you told Cindy?”

“No. Cindy doesn't know. My parents asked that I not tell her. And while I may not agree with that decision, I do respect it. Cindy never tried making a move on me anyways, so it wasn't hard to “just be friends.” So even now, Cindy thinks she's the daughter of the Preacher. She'll probably get it all figured out eventually, but for now you can't breathe a word to anyone.' Elijah nodded. “And she never complained about me acting as a big brother. I even insisted on meeting you when the two of you started dating. She was so happy when I told her I approved. Guess I shirked that brotherly duty. When we went to rescue you and I saw the guards behind her, I wanted to leap out of the car grab her and leave you there. I will do what it takes to protect my little sister. I will never see her hurt like that again. But she had given explicit orders to get you out of there no matter what. And with experience, I learned that she always has a reason.” Dan left Elijah alone in the cabin.

The next morning Conner came in with two guns. One was a simple hand held, the other was an automatic. He handed them to Elijah.

“What are these for?” Elijah asked.

“Protection,” Conner responded. “Everyone is armed except for you. We're going to keep going towards Location 1, but I just got word that there are IG patrols out and about. Remember, you shoot when I tell you to.”

“I don't see why we can't go and check the nearest hospitals for Cindy. She's a scientist, she's not going to go to some safe location without knowing that her work is being carried out how she wants it to,” Elijah said.

“We are staying on the decided path,” Conner said and left the cabin.

Dan had entered with some gear. “Here,” he said to Elijah, handing him what looked like a small view screen with colored dots. “The blue light on there is your brothers tracking chip. And this green light is this,” he opened his hand and revealed a small chip. “This is the one Cindy put in your shoulder.”

“But I thought Cindy's didn't have a tracker in it,” Elijah commented.

“Not one that anyone knew of except myself and her. She didn't like the idea of being traced, but she understood the importance of her team knowing her location when she was on a mission. This device,” Dan pointed to the little screen, “is the only one that can read her tracker. I programmed it that way. I'm the only one she trusted with it.”

“And why are you telling me this? Cindy doesn't have it on her.”

“Yes, but now you do. I agree, Cindy is not headed for Location 1. She probably went straight for the hospital. There she would have found out that the vaccine hasn't been distributed just yet. Which means she will be staying there and making sure it gets out.”

“Why hasn't it been distributed? You've had it for a while.”

“The General is as anal as Cindy is when it comes to going over all the facts. He's been going over all the results that were available on her chip. He wants to be sure that there aren't going to be any consequences. Unfortunately, he's wasting his time. Cindy would have done the same thing before having her own team vaccinated.”

“And why are you giving me this?”

“You aren't a member of the Resistance, which means you can't be punished for disobeying orders. If I go, I can be punished. The hospital is the yellow light, I marked it on the screen for you. Just make sure your dot is moving towards the yellow light. When you meet up with Cindy, just head towards the blue dot. That's Conner. He'll follow his chosen path all the way back to Location 1 before trying a different route. That might be too late if Cindy meets up with trouble. I have a sack packed up for you behind the cabin. Conner will be leaving on a “wild goose chase” in about half an hour. He'll be gone long enough for you to get going. The vehicle in the garage is gassed up and working well. It'll help cut time off of your trip.”

Elijah looked at the chip in his hand. “What about Lucy, she was using the data on this chip to start working on an airborne vaccine?”

“Lucy already made a copy of all the accessible information. She'll be working at Location 1 till you bring Cindy back. Lucy felt that somebody should be finishing Cindy's work. Now you better get ready to go. I'm taking a big risk trusting you with the rescue of my sister so don't let me regret it. And you better take these.” Dan handed the two guns to Elijah. “There's plenty of amo in your sack. I'm not saying that you'll have to use it. It's just better to be prepared.” Dan left the cabin. Elijah stood there in shock for a bit. Then he realized that he was wasting time and started preparing himself to leave.

Right on schedule, Conner came in and said that he got word that IG patrols were closing in. He was taking the guards to ward them off. Elijah was to stay in the cabin till they returned. Elijah felt guilty for lying to his brother. But he wanted to find Cindy as badly as anyone else in the Resistance. When Elijah saw that all the guards were gone, he went down to the garage and got into the vehicle. He started it up and left, making sure that his green dot was going towards the yellow one.

War Torn Hearts

Agent 3857 yawned and stretched as he leaned back in his chair. He readjusted his earphones and stared at the computer screen. His latest assignment was pretty boring. The guy didn't do anything out of the ordinary. He got up, went to work, came home ate, tinkered with his computer, showered and went to bed. It had been the same routine for the past 6 months. “Must admit, this guy is pretty good at his games. A childish habit, but he's good.” This man was listed as a person of interest, but what kind of interest Agent 3857 did not know. This guy showed no signs of communication with the enemy. Didn't even show signs of being part of the enemy. Agent 3857 knew he wasn't being paid to think, so he sat forward grabbed some more coffee, and listened to the man's steady breathing.

Little did Agent 3857 know that he was also being watched. His every action being recorded. This person was sitting in a room with two separate computers, one screen showed Agent 3857 and the other showed the real subject.

At International Headquarters, in a large conference room sat four men. Each looked perplexed over the latest string of data they had been given.

"What makes you think he's the one? He's been watched for months without going against a set routine. My god, the guy doesn't even date!"

"We have to try something. It's only a matter of time before they come up with a final weapon. It's been five years since most of their forces went underground, and our spies say that they've been quite busy. If using this guy doesn't bring out their key persons, then there's no one else. We've gone through the entire background of CW and this is the last real connection."

"What makes you think CW will come out this time? Imprisoning family members didn't seem to get a reaction, not even when we executed them."

"As the Preacher says, we'll just have to go on faith," chuckled the forth man.

"The Preacher still believes that this is a religious war that we're fighting. He thinks we're on a rampage against non-Christians. It's that belief that keeps him on our side and not out there trying to protect his daughter."

"It's settled, we bring him in. Make up false charges that he was found to be helping the enemy. With no cure for the virus at hand, most people won't question our deligence. Someone will be sent to get him out, I have no doubt that CW will be the one to do it."

"What do we tell the Preacher? He still thinks that he's in charge."

"We tell him that this man may know where his daughter is hiding. The Preacher will be more than willing to comply."

The men started heading out of the room. The last man picked up the intelligence file and stuck it into an incenerator. The folder opened and an old photo of a man in his twenties and a young woman with brown curls framing her face posing at a table, both looked very happy and in love. It was obviously from a time before the war.

Elijah Santos stopped at his normal place to dine. It was an old Mongolian resteraunt. It was quick and filling. He had just received his usual dish of meat, veggies and noodles when he heard a familiar name mentioned on the TV. "Dr. Cindy Wood still at large. For the past five years, Dr. Wood has managed to elude authorities as to her whereabouts. Tonight at 7 we will look into how a world renowned geneticist goes from curing cancer to becoming the world's most wanted terrorist. And her connections with the scientists who engineered E76..." Elijah polished off his noodles, paid his bill and left. Part of him was curious to know what would cause someone who valued human life to become a known killer. She didn't even come forward when her family was imprisoned and executed for harboring a fugitive. It definitely wasn't the same Cindy he remembered. He sighed and got into his car. He headed home to another night with his computer.

The next day, he walked into his workplace and found a note to meet with his boss in his cubicle. Figuring it was another proposal to work on, Elijah hurried over. When he got to Mr. Tellman's office he saw three other men in there waiting. "I can come back later," Elijah stammered.

Mr. Tellman looked disappointed and almost sad. "No it's alright Elijah. These men have just been filling me in on your activities. Of all people, I never thought you..."

"Mr. Santos, you are hereby under arrest by the International Police for engaging and planning terrorist activities," interrupted one of the uniformed men.

"What are you talking about?" Elijah asked. "I have never been involved in any terrorist activities, much less planned them!"

"It would be better for you to keep quiet, you will be questioned at headquarters. I would suggest you cooperate." The second man handcuffed Elijah out of the office. The uniformed men excorted him out of the building and into an unmarked car. Elijah had a sinking feeling that no matter how hard he tried to explain, he was never to enjoy his freedom again.

Across the oceans, somewhere undetected and seemingly devoid of all life, there was a fresh layer of snow on the ground. Not that it matter much since no one had tread on that ground for quite sometime. It was a quiet land, but cold. Definitely below freezing. Nothing could survive this place, not even a virus. That was why it made such an ideal location. It was one of the few places that the International Government didn't require servalience. And even if the government had, nothing would be found. The place was well protected.

"What do you mean they took him?!!!" She yelled.

The man across from her looked startled at her reaction. Wisps of brown curls fell from her ponytail. Her deep brown eyes flashing in anger. She rarely showed this kind of emotion and he had known her since they were children. She had been reading some papers in a file when she had her outburst. "What are you talking about?" he asked.

"Oh, John I forgot you were here. I just got a startling news report that's all."

John knew better than to accept this explanation. "Come on Cindy, I've known you for well over 20 years. I know when you're hiding something. It's not just some random news report."

Cindy looked a tad defeated and a bit like she would cry. "John, they took him and he has no connections. They'll kill him if he doesn't give them what they want. It'll be worse if they give him the virus."

"Who are we talking about?" John, took one look at Cindy and knew. "No, you haven't spoken to him in eleven years. No contact whatsoever right?"

"Of course. The last time I spoke to him was on the phone the day after he left. I haven't even so much as sent him a Christmas card. And in times like this, I haven't contacted anyone on the outside except my father. And that's only through the strictest of chains just so he can continue to think that I'm still in the former States. I just can't believe they took him into custody. He's stayed clear away from our type since the beginning. What could they possibly want with him?"

"Maybe they need him to design a new bridge,” John attempted at a joke. He quickly changed his tone when he saw Cindy's reaction. “So are you going to go to the General and ask him to send a rescue team after him?"

"You know the General isn't going to send a team unless he's valuable to us. And I can't let him stay there. He didn't choose."

"You do know he's bait, to get you out in the open? They've been trying to track where your messages to your father come from, for the last two years. They're just making a desperate attempt in hopes that you'll come out. And you're under orders to stay here no matter what."

Cindy flinched at the words. She knew he was being used as bait, just as her family had been used four years prior. But this time it was different, he didn't choose this. Her family knew what would happen once she went away. She begged them to come, they needed people of all talents, she told them. But they had told her that they were needed where they were. And that if the time comes they were willing to die. She gave her mother and sisters hugs, said goodbye to her grandfather and left. She knew they were right. The virus was bad and people were afraid. Her family were among the few who had chosen to take in those affected by the virus. If they hadn't been imprisoned, it would have only been a matter of time before the virus took them as well. But they chose, they had told her not to come for them if they were taken. That they knew they would be bait, that she had a job to do. But he didn't make that choice. He wasn't one of the enemy, but he wasn't on their side either. He was just an innocent. He didn't choose to die for the cause. And she couldn't leave him to.

She looked at John. Cindy wasn't the only one who lost everything. John had lost his wife and unborn son. They had been taken before anyone could get them to safety. His father and siblings had died from the virus. They were among the first victims. His mother was still out there, she said the sick needed her as well. So far, servallence had shown that she was safe. He never mentioned any of them, but he knew they were all on his mind. John kept a single candle lit in his quarters. Cindy didn't need to ask who it was for, she already knew.

Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, came into the room sensing the tension. "Auntie?" Cindy stood up and looked at them. They were all that was left of her natural family. Her sister had asked that they go with her. It wasn't right to ask them to give their lives to a cause they didn't understand. So Cindy took them, hoping that the war would be over before they became adults. "I'm fine," she said, "just a little setback in my work that's all." She turned to John, "Contact E1, tell them we have a meeting at dawn." She then left with her niece and nephew for their evening meal.

Requesting a meeting at dawn was a joke really. They lived in an underground compound. Most of the inhabitants hadn't seen real daylight in years. They had lights that changed throughout the day making it seemed like daylight. But no one could tell what the real time was outside. Guests from the outside was a rarity and took months to get the clearance for. It was a lot of work for people who just wanted "normalicy".

Cindy was in a room with computers buzzing. It usually was the warmest place in the compound next to the gardens. It was also the best place to hold a meeting. Very few people had the clearance to access this room. It handled all life support programs in the compound. Those allowed in there were a priveledged few. She saw Dan arrived looking a bit disheveled. Cindy smiled. She knew he had just rolled out of bed. He hadn't even bothered to comb his hair back. John arrived next. And then Mac, Dave and Alice. They were all there. Cindy knew that John had given them a brief summary about what was going on. And she knew that what she was about to propose was dangerous and borderline treason. But she had no choice. And these were people she trusted with her life. They'd be game no matter what the cost. She just hoped that the cost was justified.

"Well, I'm guessing that you all have an idea of why I asked for this meeting."

"Because some ex-boyfriend of yours needs us to bail him out of trouble," Dan said.

Cindy looked at Dan, he was as blunt as always. She never knew how his wife handled it. She nodded.

"Why us?" Alice asked. "We've been in retirement for five years, can't they send a field team to get him?"

"Because no one else in this compound knows he's been taken. To headquarters, he's not considered a person of interest."

"Then why do we need to risk our necks to save him?"

"I have my reasons, and it's not because he's my ex. He's more vital to this operation than he or anyone else knows."

"Well, that's good enough for me. You've never steered us wrong before, I doubt you'd start now." Mac commented.

"When do we start?" asked Dan.

Cindy looked at Dan. He was one of the lucky ones. His whole family was safely in hiding before they went underground. He had his wife and daughter there. His parents were there. And his brother was a part of their geological team. But this also made him the one with the most to lose. Cindy wasn't exactly sure of the danger they would be getting into, and she didn't want more to be lost than had to. "Dan, you're the only one of us who still has a family. I would understand if you choose to stay with them. They still need you here."

"I'm not letting you guys go on your own. Who is going to hack into the computer systems and find out where we need to go? And who is going to arrange your fake identities while you're there. We are called E1 for a reason."

"Okay," Cindy relented. "I need you guys to get the standard gear. I'll go back to the lab and make sure enough of the vaccination is prepared for each of us..."

"Whoa, wait a minute, vaccination?" John quipped up. "When did this happen?"

"It just passed the final phases. Orders were made to get enough of it produced for everyone in our outside squads first. But we still haven't gotten it to be airborne for the outside population. And it's not a cure. It will only protect you from the virus, won't destroy it. And unfortunately, it requires a sample of your DNA to cater it to you."

They left the room with plans to meet up the following week. It seemed like little time, but they had been trained to be ready at a moment's notice. This was no different.

Elijah, woke up in the same white room. He had no idea how long he had been there. If it had been hours, days or even years. There was no passage of time. The only human contact he had was when a short stocky man with glasses delivered his meal. The man never talked despite Elijah's attempts at conversation. He had not been questioned as was promised. He was just thrown into this room and left to rot it seemed. He kept going over in his head any activity he may have done that could be considered "terrorist-like" but nothing came to him. He had had the same routine for the last 11 years. Work, food, home, computer sleep. That was it, nothing more. He thought maybe they had mistaken him for his brother. But he doubted that. His brother disappeared when the new government had taken over. Something about not liking the new rules and going where people could still accept him. But his brother was never much of a model citizen. The guy experimented with less than honorable habits. But his brother had been gone for several years now. There was no way this could be about him. Though, he thought. His family had decided that it would be best to disappear. His sister and her husband were the next to leave, and then his parents. Elijah had no idea where any of them went. There was no communication with them after they left. He was alone. It served him right, he thought. He left the most valuable thing eleven years ago, how could he expect others to stick by after that?

Elijah looked around the room. There was a cot to sleep on, a small table for meals and a commode to do his business. Everything was a white color. The lights were always on. The only way in or out was through the door in which he had been brought. There didn't seem any way out of this situation.

"Here you go John," Cindy said as she gave him a shot in the arm. She had given each member of E1 the vaccination. She had also given each of them a dose for when they found their subject. No one asked how she had gotten his DNA after all this time. And she felt no need to give that information. She just wanted to get him to the compound safely and then she'd deal with any reprecussions that may come afterward.

Dan's wife Lucy gathered up the used syringes and put them in the disposal. She had been working with Cindy for over four years. Cindy considered her a valued member of the lab. And felt a pang of guilt for taking her husband away on another mission. Lucy never once complained about it when E1 was always sent on missions, but Cindy knew she worried for her husband. She wished she could give Lucy some reassurance that Dan would be back safely as soon as possible, but the words just couldn't come.

"Well, be leaving tomorrow at dawn," Cindy said. "I've set up a sighting decoy taking a path from old Canada to New York. We'll be coming in on the other side. It's risky, but hopefully we won't be there long."

Each team member nodded. Cindy had always been their leader. It wasn't a job she wanted nor was it a job she took lightly. She would be relieved when this war was over.

They left the room, each knowing what his or her part of the plan was. The rest of the evening would be spent with loved ones and making sure necessary supplies were secure. They'd be leaving early the next day.

Cindy walked into her quarters and flopped on her bed. Her niece and nephew were staying in a friend's quarters. Arrangements had already been made for their care until she returned. Not that she had to worry much, they had proven to be very self reliant. They seemed itching to do their part. Cindy hoped that the time would never come for them to be involved in this war. They had already lost so much, including a true childhood. She didn't want them to be robbed of their lives as well. Nellie, the oldest, was already fifteen. She had been begging to take combat training for the past year. Cindy saw so much of her sister in her, she knew she'd eventually have to let Nellie go and choose her own path. Cindy just wished it wasn't so dangerous. Michael still had a few years before he even qualified for training. He had inherited the family's brains though, Cindy had no worries about what he would choose to do. The boy would most likely join the ranks of the scientists and engineers in the compound. That's if the war was still going on by then. Cindy punched her pillow.

She didn't even want to be part of the war when it started. She was a scientist. Her job was to engineer cures to diseases. It was a job she enjoyed. There was nothing better than saving a life. In her career she had managed to find permanent cures to forms of cancer and several genetic diseases. She had been on the team that eradicated AIDS. She considered her life very fulfilling. But then someone let loose the virus. It wasn't some normal bug that made people sick and then they'd fight it off. This virus turned people's bodies against themselves. It subjected it's victims to a slow and painful death. And what was worse, the virus was human engineered. Both sides blamed the other for releasing the virus. The International Government made arrests, claiming to have found the scientists who engineered the virus. They were executed without any word of a trial. Cindy figured that it took the worst kind of human to engineer such a thing. And the scientists who were convicted of the crime, she knew were not the worst kind of human beings. She had worked with them on the AIDS project. They placed as high a value on human life as she did. She remembered the day they realized that they actually had a cure on their hands. Testing had come up with amazing results. The whole team went out to celebrate. There was no way they would have engineered a virus that would kill so many people. When they were convicted, Cindy found herself examining her views on the latest regime. She had decided to make some drastic decisions. That was when she became part of E1. It was a choice that completely changed her life and those on the team.

She trusted each and every member on E1. But she couldn't tell them the main reason why they were the ones to rescue him and not some other team. She felt guilty withholding information from them, but this was an instance in which the less they knew the safer they all would be. Better they beleived that she was merely going to save an ex boyfriend. Ex the word seemed so negative in her mind. He was the man she had loved. The man whose calls she always looked forward to. The man whose smile lit up her world. The only man who managed to impress her. He was also the last man she would ever be with. After he left she threw herself into her career and never stopped for a personal life.

"He's already been here for two months, and CW still hasn't made an attempt at rescue. I say we cut our losses and look for another direction." The Preacher was speaking to the four heads of the International government.

"He is our last form of bait. Give it time. CW will show. I thought you wanted your daughter found Preacher," a dark balding man responded.

"I do. It's just that she didn't show when her family was brought in. She didn't even attend their funerals when the virus finally took them. Those poor souls, thinking that they'd be helping if they just cared for the sick."

The dark man looked at his companions. None had told the Preacher exactly how CW's family had died. The news given to the public was that they had contracted the virus from caring for the sick. They had died in custody. The truth was much more sinister.

"If you have a better idea, please enlighten us. Last I heard that your pleas with your daughter by email to turn herself in has fallen on deaf ears. We can't even track where the messages are being sent from."

The Preacher looked disturbed. "I just don't want my daughter harmed in all of this. She had been mislead from the time she was young. She just needs some help being helped to the true path."

"Of course. We understand, and once she is in custody we will make sure that she is helped as much as possible. We only want what is best for the people. There is no need to harm her, she is just wanted for questioning and then we will hand her over to your capable hands, Preacher. We are aware that it is your work that truly keeps this government running."

The Preacher looked satisfied by this answer. He made a curt nod and then left the room.

"Either the Preacher is a complete moron, or he truly believes that we are only going to question CW," a stalky man with glasses commented.

"No matter. We need him. We must keep him happy. Without him posing as a religious leader for the world, we would be dealing with more chaos then we already have to," the balding guy replied.

"He wants to show his daughter the true way. It may work to our advantage, may break her, make her more cooperative," another suggested.

"That is if CW decides to rescue our young guest," the balding guy said pointing to a view screen looking into a white room where a disheveled man lay sleeping on a cot.

"What if CW chooses not to send a team or to come rescue him herself?"

"Then we'll just do what we've always been doing. Use E76 to our advantage once again. It's a lovely little weapon, don't you agree?"

The other three men nodded their agreement and chuckled. The tides had turned when the virus had hit the public. People begin turning to the International Government for help and relief. Those who had been so vocal were suddenly suffering and dying. The government was suddenly viewed as a savior. Those who were still opposed were forced to go underground. Yes, E76 definitely made their lives easier.

Due to the amount of facial hair that he had managed to accumulate, Elijah knew that he had been confined to this room for weeks. He still had had no contact with anyone from the outside. Still hadn't made any way with the man who brought his meals. He had figured out that the room was severely insulated. He had made some head way on the walls, but then a blistering headache caused him to pass out. When he came to the wall had been repaired. He couldn't see any ventilation system but knew one was there, since the air never became stale.

With all the time he had been spending alone, Elijah found himself doing a lot of thinking. He figured that there was no longer any sense in trying to get out. He no longer had a job. He had been arrested publicly at work, and every arrest made is reported on television. He would have no luck getting employment elsewhere since no one wants a criminal against the government in there employ. He kept going over in his mind what he may have done that could have been considered illegal. The net was severely monitored, no "dangerous" sites could be accessed without the proper clearance and he definitely didn't have the clearance. Nor did he care to check into the sites in the first place. He doubted that the few people whom he talked to on a regular basis had any connections with the enemy. He hadn't had a girlfriend for a few years and he didn't pay for companionship. Transients were a thing of the past. So him being hit up for money at a gas station hadn't happened in quite some time.

His mind kept going back to the news cast he had heard the night before he was brought in. He didn't think they had brought him in over a connection with her. He hadn't had any contact with her since before the war. But, still he wondered. Not if he had been brought in because of her. But what had caused her to become an enemy of the government. Why she hadn't turned herself in when her family was put into custody. Would things have been different if he had stayed? Did she ever marry? She had been so enthused by her career. She always claimed that she was out to save the world. She believed that politics had no standing in the sciences. What caused it all to change he wondered.

He also thought about his own family. Whether or not they were alive. His dad had past away three years ago. A victim of the virus. His brother left when the new government was cleaning out any unwanted behavior. His brother rarely held a job and experimented with countless drugs. Instead of agreeing to get cleaned up, his brother chose to go underground with the Resistance. Elijah hadn't heard from him since. It had been seven years. His sister and her husband also chose the underground life. Why, he didn't know. They were model citizens. Hard workers, tax paying people. His sister only told him that she was doing what she believed was right and that someday he'd have to make his own choice instead of always running from it. Two years ago his mother followed suit. She told him goodbye and tried convincing him to go with her. But he had refused. He had a good job, the International Government wasn't giving him any problems. He saw no need to leave. The past couple of years he found that he missed his family. But he had no way of contacting them or even knowing if they were alive. And the Resistance itself could just be a ploy to get anti-governs into custody.

“So how's the infiltration going?” Cindy asked Dan as she brought him his third mug of coffee.

“It's going well, they have very little security compared to our compound. The computer is easy to hack into.”

They had managed to acquire a small studio flat. It was cramped but the team was used to small quarters. Dan had quickly set up his computers and began trying to hack into the International Government headquarters' system.

“Their firewalls have been updated since the last time we hacked in. But it's still not as advanced as ours. Give me some time and I'll be able to tell you who each of their spies are, who designed the virus, where the leaders sleep...”

“Dan, we just need ID's and Elijah's location,” Cindy said.

“I know, but we might as well bring the General back all the information we can, who knows when we'll be able to do this again.”

“You mean, who knows when we'll have another computer expert as talented as you,” John spoke up.

“Meh,” Dan replied

“Well, don't dabble too long in there. We just need personell IDs so we can get in,” Cindy said.

“They might be expecting that, you know.”

“They might be, but we are trying to infiltrate the higher ups. We just need janitorial staff, cooks, guards. Anything that will help us get to him and get out.”

“Well, missy I can tell you that he is under constant guard. He's being held in isolation, in an underground room. Only human contact these past few months is one of the International leaders, who brings his meals.”

“Why would an International leader be bringing him meals?”

“Not sure, but it's going to make it a hell of a lot harder for us to get to him. We can't exactly impersonate a leader now.”

“Okay people, we should try to get some sleep. Dan, you have first watch,” Alice said.

Everyone grabbed their respective sleeping gear. They had had a a long week, from sneaking out of the Compound, acquiring necessary funding, and then traveling to a location that was near the International Headquarter.

And just to throw off authorities, Cindy had to arrange for a sighting in New York. She figured that it was time. She kept making sure her email correspondence with her father could only be trace to New York. It was still a heavily populated city. Easy for someone to disappear if they wanted to. In fact the Resistance had one of their locations there. New York was a good choice. It provided easy access to information, the “undesirables” had been cleaned out making New York a place known for the elite. Police influence was high and the crime rate low. No one suspected that an illegal organization was there. Yet New York hid several underground organizations. A sighting of Dr. Cindy Woods there would have the authorities attention for months. Which left the west coast with minimum security. Which was where Cindy and her team were at.

Cindy was aware that Elijah may not be held at headquarters. But the security there was the top that was possible under the IG. But she did have it on good authority that all of IG's information was stored in the headquarters' computers. Where ever Elijah was being held, the information would be in those computers. Cindy was also aware that they should get as much information as possible while they were there. It might turn the tides of the war. She rolled over in her sleeping bag and listened to the deep breathing of her comrades. Eventually sleep overtook her as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Well, it seems like a true sighting. Her messages to her father have been traced there. Seems she uses one of those cyber cafes to send correspondence. The owner only just spotted her though. So either she's slipping, or she wants our attention on New York.”

“I always said that those cafes should be shut down. Makes it harder to track people's activities.”

“We don't want people to start doubting whether or not this is a democracy. You make them thin that their freedoms are being set aside temporarily for safety reasons they are more willing to comply. Just slowly strip rights away. Not all at once, or else the Resistance will have more than enough supporters.”

“Do you think that she's planning a rescue? He's been here for over three months now. If we keep him isolated like this, he is going to start thinking that the Resistance is right.”

“He won't last long enough to join them. You're right though, maybe we should start sending our guest a daily visitor. Make sure he doesn't start getting ideas.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Well, I can give you his location, get you in on a fake ID, but he's been in isolation for the past three months. No once come or goes from his cell except for one of the leaders who brings his meals. Not sure how we can infiltrate that,” Dan said.

“Just get what you can. I just need to get in as an employee. I have an idea on how to get him out.” Cindy replied.

“You do know, he's bait for you?” John repeated for the hundredth time.

“I know, but we need to get him out. Dan put Mac and John as guards, make sure they get assigned to Elijah's quarters. Alice will be in the kitchens. Give me an assignment as the stationed nurse. How do I look as a blond?”

“Well, with that body, they won't even notice your face,” Dan commented.

Cindy threw her towel at him. “Dan, what would your wife say?”

“She'd call me a horny bastard and drag me to bed.”

“Well, everyone you know your part of the plan. In two weeks we should have Elijah and be on our way home. Dan...”

“I know, I know, I'm to stay here keep you guys safe and retrieve as much information as possible for the Resistance.”

Cindy nodded. The next two weeks required the success of all of them. She didn't doubt their talents, and she did plan on a back up. But even that depended on Elijah getting safely to the compound, with or without her.

After months of no one to talk to, Elijah found himself with a daily visitor. He was getting sick of the man though. The guy kept asking about Dr. Woods, the Resistance, his part in it all. Elijah had no information to give him. He began to wish he did, maybe then this imprisonment would end. The man always carried a Bible with him and proceeded to tell him how the International Government only wanted to spread Christianity. And how the Resistance was only trying to hinder their progress.

The guy reminded Elijah of Cindy's stories about her father. At the time he was a minister in Wisconsin. According to Cindy's father, she was the black sheep, choosing science over religion. If this man was right, and it was a war based on religion then Cindy would have no part of it. She didn't believe that a religion that spouts peace, had any business in war. Much less in the senseless killing of millions of people.

He found himself wondering if Cindy went into hiding over fear of false imprisonment. Maybe the news reports were wrong and she was no threat to society. He knew all this speculation was getting him nowhere. Cindy was not there for him to get answers from. And he had a feeling that if she had been there, then there would be no need for him to be in custody.

It was the day that they had planned for. For the past two weeks, Cindy and her team had infiltrated into the IG. They blended in with the other employees. Each performing his or her designated IG task. All Cindy had to do was wait for the call for the on sight nurse. She had given Alice just enough tetra-toxin to put Elijah into a death-like coma. Alice was to lace his daily meal with it just before handing it to one of the leaders to be delivered.

Cindy would then have Elijah pronounce dead. The guards (John and Mac) would move Elijah's “body” to be disposed of. Once outside Elijah would be revived and they would be on their way back to the Compound. That is, if everything went as planned.

“What do you mean, he just collapsed?”

“I brought his meal, he started eating and I left. I checked the monitors when I came up here and he was convulsing. I already paged the nurse.”

The view screen showed a blond nurse checking the man's pulse and shaking her head to the guards. “Wait a minute! Freeze that frame and run a facial recognition analysis program!”

“My god. That can't be CW. How long has she been here?”

“Alert the guards, I want her in custody.”

Cindy, John and Mac had successfully gotten Elijah out to the body disposal without attracting attention. They just needed to get beyond the perimeter where Dan and Alice were waiting with a van that was fully equipped with everything needed to revive Elijah.

“Umm.. Cindy,” Mac said as they were nearing the perimeter. “They know you're here. They just ordered the guards to get you and the whole building is in lockdown.”

“Well, it's a good thing that we're no longer in the building,” she responded.

As she said this, shouts of the real guards could be heard. They broke into a run. “Hold it,” Cindy said, “Put him down.”

“What do you mean? They're right behind us.”

“Just do it, hurry!” Cindy pulled out a syringe and knelt next to Elijah's still body. She stuck it in his shoulder. While doing so she bent towards his ear. “Forgive me Elijah. I had hoped you could make your own choice. Not backed into a corner like this. I did what I could to protect you from all of this. Whatever you do, keep alive. You're too important to lose..”

“Cindy we need to go now!” Mac yelled.

“Just keep alive,” Cindy whispered one last time to Elijah. She stood up. John and Mac picked Elijah's body back up and started sprinting towards the van. Alice had the door open and they managed to get Elijah in when the guards open fired. Mac fell.

“Get out of here now!” Cindy yelled to Dan as she and John were pulled from the doors. Dan sped away as the rest of the guards over took Cindy, John and Mac's body.

Elijah's dreams were odd. First he was in a darkened room will all kinds of computer equipment blinking around him. The room jostled. The the fog would overtake him. He could hear a whisper telling him to “keep alive.” But no matter how hard he tried, he could not find the owner of the voice. Then he was moving or floating through a hall. For some reason he was floating while facing the ceiling. All he could see were the bright light against the white ceiling. He heard voices in the background, but when he tried to grasp what they were saying the fog overtook him again and he found himself trying to follow that voice. Then he was in a white room where a familiar looking man was watching him. “Why was this man familiar?” his foggy mind kept asking. “He was listed on TV as a wanted criminal a few years back,” he thought. “But that's not why he's familiar,” Elijah's mind argued with itself. And then it hit him. He was her friend. Years ago. They would go to the guy's parties, video games, computers, LAN parties, movies. It was her world and she had tried to share it with Elijah. The man looked different, worn out. During that time years ago he had less lines on his face, and this carefree look in his eyes. Elijah had worried that she cared more for this guy instead of him. When her computer needed fixing, they had gone to the guy's house for the repairs. The two seemed deep in conversation and Elijah felt as if he was intruding.

“Well, you're finally awake,” the guy commented.

“Where am I..,” Elijah racked his brain for a name, “Dan?”

“In what we so fondly call the Compound,” Dan replied, “Sorry, we had to keep you sedated for so long. Security measure. You have no permanent effects from the tetra-toxin.”

“The what?”

“Cindy had tetra-toxin given to you to put you in a death-like coma. It was the easiest way to get you out,”

“Where is Cindy?”

Dan looked saddened, “She was captured, you were the bait to lure her.”

“What do you mean...”

“That's all the information I can give you for now. Rest, get your strength. The General will be visiting to question you.” Dan got up and left the room, leaving Elijah as alone and confused as he had been in the past few months.

“What do you mean he wasn't injected with the vaccine?” Dan asked the woman in front of him. They were in Elijah's room. The lady was doing Elijah's exam.

“I'm saying that his blood shows none of the markers that Cindy had John design for the vaccine. They did it as a way to know who had received the vaccine and who hasn't. I think Cindy put something else in him and I want to do a quick scan of his shoulder.”

Dan looked at Elijah, then back at the woman and nodded. She walked over to Elijah wigh a portable scanning device. She ran it around his shoulder, it made a rapid beeping noise. She pushed a few buttons, smiled and said, “Found it!” The lady grabbed a syringe and stuck it in Elijah's shoulder, he winced from the pain. “Sorry,” she said. “Got it.”

She walked over to her bag and pulled out a container of liquid, injected the contents of the syringe into it. She shook the container for a bit and then took a pair of tweezers. She removed something from the container and went to the computer she had brought with her.

“What are you doing?” Elijah asked.

“Cindy inserted a data chip into your shoulder. I'm about to find out what information she put on it.” She put the chip into the computer.

What came up was a slide show of pictures. Some were of the ocean, others of Elijah posing. Elijah recognized the pictures. They were from a vacation to the coast that he and Cindy had taken. It had occurred over eleven years ago. He was confused. “This is the information?”

The girl smiled. “Yes, and no. We each carry data chips with pictures. Sort of like those old wallet pictures. That way if we're caught, it just looks like we're carrying family momemtos. But...” She entered a sequence of numbers. “When we enter a specified code...” she turned the computer to Elijah. The pictures melted away and lines of text, diagrams, and graphs appeared. “We get data. This here is Cindy's work. Unfortunately, it's incomplete, as far as I know, Cindy didn't give the code to access everything. Dan, can you...?”

“Crack it. In time, yeah. But Cindy has never been one to choose simple codes. You have to know her backwards and forwards to get in easily. And the only one who can do that has also been captured.”

“Why can't you guys pull a rescue the way you did me?”

“Because getting her out will be harder tan springing you. You were used as bait to lure her in. Granted you weren't supposed to be saved. But the IG has been trying to get her since before we went into hiding.”

Elijah was not surprised that he had been used as bait. But the fact that Cindy was part of the rescue while knowing that he was bait did.

“Well, what kind of data is on there?” Elijah asked.

Dan and the girl looked startled, “We can't explain it just yet, you don't have the clearance.”

“She used me as a mule for her data. I have a right to know what it was I transported.”

Dan looked angry at this comment, “She risked her life to get you out of there. A good man lost his life in the process. And now, two of our best scientists are in the custody of the IG.”

“Its has to do with the work Cindy was doing here.” The girl jumped in. “We can't give you anymore information than that till the General clears you.” She picked up her stuff and headed towards the door. “Dan...”

“I'll catch up with you Lucy, you go ahead.” Once Lucy was out of the room, Dan turned towards Elijah. “We are doing the best that we can for you right now. Cindy insisted on your rescue without the General's approval, and while she hasn't steered us wrong yet she has left us in the dark about you. So I suggest, you cut down on the questions because we don't have answers.” Dan headed out the door. He looked lost, and tired.

The next few days passed slowly for Elijah. At least he wasn't completely confined to his room. He had limited access to halls to walk. He was provided with his own bathroom and needed hygiene elements. Upon first looking at himself in the mirror, Elijah could hardly recognize himself. He had lost a lot of weight in the past few months. And his facial hair was out of control. He laughed slightly when a thought about Cindy came to mind. She had seen photos of him from his college years and had commented that she would never have agreed to a date with him if he had still been that scrawny. Now he looked worse. Elijah found himself hoping that Cindy was alright.

A lady who had introduced herself as Alice came in a few days later with fresh clothing for Elijah. “I'm to escort you to the General's office as soon as you are changed,” she said. Elijah had learned from Dan that Alice had taken a bullet in the leg during the rescue attempt. It was Alice who had revived him in the back of a van, while Dan was speeding to a secure location.

When Elijah was finished changing, he found himself being led through countless halls. He knew he could never find his way back on his own. They stopped outside a sealed door, Alice opened it and ushered Elijah in. The General was at his desk, going over some papers with Lucy standing in front of him.

“Thank you Lucy. You can return to the lab. I'll handle this matter.” Lucy nodded and headed out the door. The General dismissed Alice and then turned to Elijah. “Well, I hear you've had quite the adventure with one of my teams. Lucy tells me that you brought back Cindy's work with you, so there isn't too much lost time on that. As to what to do with you. I'm at a loss. If we send you back to the outside, your life is over. You had a very public arrest, no one will believe that you were falsely arrested.”

Elijah didn't know whether he was to respond or not. So he just kept quiet and let the General keep talking.

“Fortunately for you, there are people here who think that you will be able to provide an asset to our organization. Since I have no knowledge of your skills as of yet, nor do I know how well you can be trusted. So for now, you'll be stationed in the kitchens. Normally, you would be granted living quarters in Section 2, but this young man has vouched for you to be staying with him in Section 4.”

A man seemed to appeared from the shadows of the bookcase. Elijah, recognized him immediately. “Hey Bro,” the man said.

“It seems you and Conner here know each other. He says you're more than trustworthy. So I've agreed to leave him in your capable hands.”

The General waved his hand as to dismiss them. Elijah, walked out with Conner. His head still spinning form what he just realized. His brother was still alive, and was working for the Resistance. They walked down a long hall, each in his own thoughts. They then stopped at a door, Conner typed in a code on the keypad and they entered. “Welcome to Section 4,” he said.

Elijah walked through the door. The place was bright, like sunlight was pouring through some invisible window. There were wide corredores and people going about their business. Children were running around like they were outdoors on a Saturday. Elijah looked slightly confused.

“We're underground,” Conner explained. “The engineers in Section 8 set up the lighting to act as sunlight does throughout the day. They even set up “windows” in the living units that have digital images of outdoor scenes. It's all very life like. Ah, here we are. Home sweet home.” Conner opened a door to a unit.

A young woman stopped what she was doing. A look of worry was replaced by joy. She came over to Conner and gave him a tight embrace. “I've missed you so much,” she said.

“Ah, Hon I've only been gone for a few hours.” The lady looked confused. “I'd like to introduce you to my brother Elijah. Elijah, this is my wife Lena. Our daughter is around here somewhere.”

Lena laughed. “She's in the garden with Sue and her family.” She gave Elijah a hug. “Hello, Elijah. You must excuse the mess, my husband did not tell me you were coming.” She gave Conner a smile.

“The General just gave me the okay to bring him home.”

“Well, I'll just put another place at the table. You and Elijah can go get Ellie,” Lena said.

As he and Conner were leaving, he saw that there were only two places set at the table. He followed Conner toward the garden. “Wife? Daughter?” He asked, “Never pictured you married, much less supporting a family.”

Conner laughed. “Well, when I joined up with the Resistance this isn't what I had pictured. I had started out on the janitorial staff. You're lucky they're starting you in the kitchens, I had to work up to that. Met Lena while I was on kitchen duty for the school here. She teaches music. We have to give our children some sort of recreation. Anyways, we hit it off. Eventually, got married and had Ellie. I now work as bodyguard for the General. Must be a huge change from the strung out brother you used to know. Huh?”

They stopped outside a door. Conner typed in another code and the door opened. “We can't be too safe here. Had an issue with IG spies about five years ago. Since then, everything has its own security.” They walked into what appeared to be an outdoor garden. There was the sound of water somewhere. Lot's of green and flowering plants. And a playground in the distance. There were children laughing and playing. Then one child yelled “Daddy!” and started running. Conner scooped her up and gave her a bear hug. Then he waved to a young lady with three children. She had an expression of worry that was replaced by relief.

Elijah and Conner carrying Ellie left the garden and headed towards Conner's living unit.

Elijah spent the next two months working in the kitchens. He helped prepare meals and made sure they were delivered to the proper locations. He learned the ins and outs of Section 4. There really wasn't anywhere that was off limits to his security clearance. Except that he didn't have clearance to leave the section. He got to get to know his niece and sister in law. Conner returned every evening in time for the last meal and a bedtime story.

Elijah did begin to wonder if the General had forgotten about him. He wondered what kind of information Cindy had put on that chip. He still wasn't sure why Cindy had put herself into danger to get him out. Or why he kept hearing that whisper each night as he tried to sleep. He found himself hoping that Cindy was okay.

“The General has requested a meeting with you. I'll be taking you to him tomorrow morning.” Conner said one evening during supper.

An expression of concern swept across Lena's face, but she quickly replaced it with a small smile. She got up and started clearing the dishes.

“What does the General want me for?” Elijah asked.

“They finally analyzed the information Cindy left and have agreed to go over it with you. And there is news about Cindy herself,” Conner replied.

“A rescue?”

“Not exactly sure, it'll be discussed tomorrow.” Conner said.

“If there's going to be a rescue, I'm going. I can't sit there in the kitchens while someone else is risking his life.”

“You don't have much choice. That's all I can tell you man. So stop asking.”

That night Elijah didn't get much sleep. The next morning he found himself entering the General's office much like he had a few months prior. And again there was Lucy standing across from the General's desk. There was also Dan and Alice. The General was looking intently over a file when Elijah and Conner walked in.

“Well, since we're all here I guess we should get this meeting started. Lucy, why don't you tell us your findings first and we'll go from there.”

“I've analyzed the accessible information that Cindy had sent. She had good reason for wanting you rescued Elijah. Your DNA has its own vaccine against the virus encoded into itself. Seems it's your DNA that we have been using as a template for the vaccine. It may even be the key to the cure. If the IG had found that out, they would have found a way to mutate the virus and would have killed you to keep a vaccine out of reach. Still sketchy on how Cindy got this information to begin with, but we now know that you may be the clue to changing the outcome of this war.”

Elijah looked stunned. He didn't know how to respond to the information that he was just presented with. He wanted answers, and he got them. He wasn't sure how he felt about “changing the outcome of this war.”

“That means you will be transferred to Section 8. It's our most secure site in the Compound. And you'll have a new assignment. Of course since you do have family outside of Section 8, you will be granted some leave time each month to visit,” the General explained. “Now Conner, as to your information...”

“We have received word from one of our spies that Cindy and John have managed to escape the IG. With a bit of inside help of course. Our guess is that they will head for the nearest Resistance location for refuge. That would be Location 1. If they are traveling on foot and neither is injured then it'll take them a couple of weeks to get there. I will be taking E2 and 4 to retrieve them and bring them back to the Compound.”

“I'll be going with you,” Elijah spoke up.

“You won't,” the General said. “In case you haven't been listening, you're the key to the cure to this virus. We can't afford to risk the IG getting their hands on you. The moment they try exposing you to the virus they'll know. We lucked out last time, we may not be so lucky this time.”

“I didn't agree to join the Resistance and I didn't agree to follow orders. If you don't allow me to go on the rescue, I will go myself.”

The General looked flustered. “Lucy, escort Elijah to his new quarters in Section 8. I will finish the rest of this meeting.”

Lucy nodded and escorted Elijah out. They walked along several halls. Eventually, they stopped outside a door and Lucy typed in her code. “This is Section 8,” she said. It looked quite similar to Section 4. After passing through several halls they stopped outside a door. “This is your new unit. You're pass code will let you in. You will have an escort for the next few days. They will show you around and will take you to your new work location when the assignment comes.”

Elijah entered the unit. It was the size of a 1 bedroom flat. Seemed to be a bit larger than his brother's 2 bedroom unit. It was already furnished. And was equipped with a kitchen. It reminded him of an apartment on the outside. He went to the bedroom and laid down on the bed.

A knock on the unit door woke him from a short sleep. He got up to let whomever in. It was Lucy. “I'm to take you to your escort's location,” she said. Elijah closed the unit door and followed her. A few doors down the hall, Lucy stopped and knocked on a door. A young girl answered. She looked to be about 15. “Elijah, this is Nellie. She and her brother Michael will be showing you around for the next few days. How are things Nellie?”

“Fine, thanks Aunt Lucy. You still want Michael and I to come over for dinner?”

“Of course. You two are family, no need for you to ask. Well, I'm needed in the lab. I'll leave you guys alone now,” Lucy left the unit.

“So you're the famous Elijah?” Nellie said.

“Yeah.”

“Well, come in I'll make some tea. Then I'll give you the grand tour of the place.”

Elijah, walked into the unit. A boy who looked to be about ten was on the floor playing with an old gaming unit. “Hello,” Elijah said. The boy nodded his hello.

Elijah walked into what was the kitchen. “Feel free to wander a bout. No top secret stuff is stored in these quarters,” Nellie said.

Elijah walked around. The quarters were slightly larger than his own. He wondered what the children's parents did. He found the bathroom. Very simple décor. White towels, a simple toothbrush holder with three toothbrushes. It looked very neat and tidy. He found what he guessed was the boy's room. It looked as if the boy has an eye for science. There was a microscope on a desk, video games, and lots of books. The next room had maps with push pins. A pair of black combat boots were sitting next to the bed. The next room was a sewing room. It had clothes and fabric in piles. “My aunt is against wasting,” Nellie said behind him. She handed him a mug of tea. “She saves the clothes we outgrow and remakes them into something different. Kind of funny since the Compound has people who make garments for everyone. But my aunt says they have more than enough work to do. We also have one of the few units that has a kitchen. Auntie wanted things to seem as much as a real home as possible.” Nellie led him to another room. This one seemed vaguely familiar to Elijah. The bed was made with a blue and white quilt. An old faded pink quilt lay at the foot. There was a shell box on the bed stand. He picked it up. Inside the box was a cord necklace with a blue ceramic dolphin. “Auntie usually wears that all the time.” Elijah recognized the dolphin. Though last time he saw it, it was on a bookmark. He had given it to her on their first date.

“Who's your aunt?” Elijah asked.

“Doctor Cindy Wood,” Nellie answered. “But everyone around here just calls her Cindy.”

“Cindy is your aunt? But I thought all her relatives had died.”

“Not all. My mom and dad handed us over to Auntie when she asked them to join her.”

“Why didn't they join her?” he asked.

“They felt that they were needed there. It was a tearful time. I was only ten and Michael was five. Kind of hard to make kids understand that they will never see their parents again. Well, let's get going. We'll give you the grand tour of the section. You don't report to your new assignment for the next few days.”

Nellie, Elijah and Michael left the unit and headed down the halls. “I'm sure you were told that we're underground. The lighting mimics outdoor light. So when it seems twilight out in the halls it's twilight outside. Kind of a cool set up. Each section is divided up by the level of security that is needed for inhabitants. Section 1 is food resources. Section 2 contains Janitorial, and kitchen staff. Section 3 contains teachers, clothing and merchandise. We each get a monthly trip there. Section 4 contains security guards. Sections 5 and 6 are medical. Section 7 is schools for all the children except for those in Section 8...”

“Why not Section 8?”

“Children like to talk, might leak information. We have our own school here. Teachers are those who work here or have passed special clearance to teach here.”

“And what does Section 8 cater to?”

“Section 8 contains our scientists, our engineers, our doctors. Since the war has gone biological, they are the ones we keeps under highest security. We have other locations. They hold soldiers and such. Trying to convince my aunt to let me join them, but she hasn't budged.”

They walked down the halls and stopped outside a door. “Here is the kitchen.”

“I thought the kitchens I worked for supplied all the meals for the sections.”

“Oh they do, except Section 8 and 9. Section 8 has its own kitchen and so does section 9. Part of the whole security thing.”

“What's Section 9?”

“The General's quarters. And other stuff. I've never been there so I can't tell you much about it.”

They could smell food cooking. “Smells like tacos for dinner tonight. Michael will be thrilled.” Nellie looked down at the little boy who was following them. He had a little smirk on his face.

“But you guys have your own kitchen.”

“And my aunt uses it as much as possible, but because I have school and work I don't have time to cook a healthy meal for Michael and me. So the kitchen delivers when my aunt is gone. I just have to let them know that Michael and I will be at Aunt Lucy's for dinner tonight.”

“Is Lucy really your aunt?”

“Nah, she's married to one of Aunt Cindy's best friends. We've spent every holiday together since coming here. So they're like family. Next stop is the library. We have a large collection of books. When people were being brought into hiding they being scientists, brought books as their items of value. The true owners are recorded and then the books put in the library.” They entered the library.

It held shelves and shelves of books. Elijah couldn't help but think that this was Cindy's favorite place to go. She was always reading. She even tried convincing him to let her read some of her favorite novels out loud. He left before she could.

Their next stop was the gardens. They were similar to the ones in Section 4. “I know it looks like it's outside. But the gardens really are a giant room. All the sections have them. They help supply valuable oxygen and a good food source. The rooms are designed to mimic the outdoors. It helps people from going stir crazy.”

They walked around the gardens for a bit. There were streams flowing through. Flowering plants were clumped under trees. There was even a swimming hole for the kids. It looked like a little paradise. Elijah could understand the need for something like that. The gardens exuded a calm, that he had a feeling was needed for those who had been in hiding for so long.

After the gardens, Nellie led Elijah back to his quarters for the evening. His meal was already waiting on the table. “I'll give you a tour of the labs tomorrow,” she said and then left with her brother. Elijah found himself alone again in his quarters. Though he had found Nellie quite talkative, it had been quite an informative day. Most of the people Elijah had been associated with for the past few months had left him in isolation or had been so tight lipped about everything, he begun thinking that he might be the “enemy.” Nellie provided a breath of fresh air. She had no problem letting him know about the structures in the compound, how they get oxygen, the water purifying system... Since she was a trained escort around the compound, he knew she was only giving information that wasn't considered to be confidental. He still had no idea where on earth he was located, though he had his suspicions. He didn't know how deep underground they were, and though Nellie had mentioned other compounds, he didn't know where they were. And to top it off, he still had no idea what his new assignment would. No one had come to tell him what was going on with Cindy's rescue mission. And he was nowhere close to figuring out how to get to her in the first place. And he didn't understand this urge to find her. He kept telling himself that it was because he owed her. She risked herself to save him. But he didn't even find that convincing.

The next day, Elijah found breakfast already waiting at the table and Nellie waiting to give him another tour of Section 8. “Where's Michael?” he asked.

“Oh he has classes today. Never misses. Mom used to say that he would take after Aunt Cindy. Even then he had a curious nature.”

Elijah finished his meal and they headed out. Nellie had told him that they would be visiting the labs. Elijah found himself trying to listen to Nellie explaining the various tasks that were performed at each lab. Elijah, found himself wondering why Nellie would go through all this trouble to explain each lab. He was an engineer not a scientist. He remembered when Cindy would tell him about some new project she was doing. It rarely made sense to him, but he nodded absentmindedly. She probably was doing the same thing when he talked about drainage studies. She never complained about it though.

They stopped next to a door. Nellie knocked. “I don't have the clearance for this one,” she explained. A young man came, “We're here for Dan.” The man nodded, shut the door. A few moments later Dan appeared. “I promised Aunt Lucy we'd come get you for lunch.”

“That time already? Guys, take a break for the next hour.” Dan nodded a hello to Elijah.

They started walking down the hall of labs. They turned several corners before stopping. Elijah saw Michael stepped out of a door. “Aunt Lucy was wondering where you guys were. She sent me to look for you.”

“Well, you found us,” Dan said, scooping the boy up with one arm. He carried the laughing boy back through the door. Nellie and Elijah followed them in. They walked into a room that was brightly lit. There was a table in the middle of the room with their lunch already set out. The room itself looked like a staff break room. There was a glass window looking into another room that had cubicles set up with computers. Beyond that was another large window that looked into a lab with people in white suits. Each room was separated by a door with a keypad.

Lucy smiled when they entered. Next to her was a little girl who looked to be about six. She was sitting in a chair swinging her legs under the table. “Elijah this is my daughter Gina. Children are generally brought to their parent's work sites for meals. Sort of the Resistance's way of encouraging family togetherness,” Lucy said.

Everyone sat down at the table. They had a lunch of garlic and lemon chicken with rice. There was steamed broccoli as a side. Elijah didn't ask how they got the chicken, but Nellie seemed to sense his questioning. “Section 1 is set up as a farm. Most of the food for the compound is raised there. It's delivered fresh to the kitchens each day. It's a neat setup. If you want, I can get permission to take you on a tour there sometime.”

Elijah smiled and nodded. How they were raising plants and animals underground was something he wanted to see. The whole compound seemed to be it's own little world. No wonder the IG was having so much trouble finding them.

As they finished their meal, there was a tap at the door and then the sound of the keypad being used. The door opened and Conner walked in. Lucy turned to Nellie, “Nellie could you take Michael and Gina back to the school. You can return to class to for the day.” Nellie didn't ask any questions. She just grabbed Gina and Michael by the hand and left the room.

“The rescue will be heading out in two days,” Conner said. “Dan, the General sent you and Lucy orders.” He handed them a slip of paper. Dan read it and passed it to Lucy nodding. “Your assignment will be taking place as soon as we get them back. As for you...” Conner turned to Elijah.

“I already said that I would be going. I'm not a Resistance member so ordering me to stay isn't going to work,” Elijah said.

“I realize that, and so does the General. You will be coming along, on he condition that you obey my orders. If I tell you to run, you run. If I say shoot, you shoot. The General does not like the idea of you being out there. And nor do I. But if you're this insistent on rescuing a damsel in distress it would be better if you at least have some protection. Do you understand?”

Elijah nodded.

“Good. Preparations are being made for you. Can't tell you to pack anything since you don't have anything to begin with. I'll be back here in two days to get you.” Conner nodded to Dan and Lucy and let himself out.

“A little bossy isn't he?” Elijah commented as soon as his brother had left.

“Well, he has his reasons,” Dan replied.

“And what are your reasons,” Elijah asked.

“I don't understand,” Dan said.

“How soon after I left did you and Cindy hook up? “Why did you just abandon her and bring me back?”

“We didn't hook up,” Dan replied.

“Oh come on! You two were always taking. Always chatting online. When we'd hang out, she rarely left your side. I left because I knew I was in the way!”

“Then you thought wrong. Her and I never had plans to hook up, and we never will. She follows her heart and I was not in its path. As for abandoning her, I did as I was ordered. She told me to get you out of there. If it were up to me, she wouldn't have been on that mission in the first place!”

“Dan,” Lucy said putting her hand on his arm, “Go back to the lab. I still need you to get the bugs out of that new program.” Dan nodded and left. Lucy turned to Elijah. “I know it's tough for you right now. You probably have a lot of questions and aren't getting answers. Keep in mind, Cindy knew what she was doing. She never considered herself above those who worked with her. Believe me. I've known her since she finished her doctorate. We're all taking this hard. She's more than just a scientist to us. She's family. And Dan is taking it the hardest. He's known Cindy since their college days. She's like a sister to him.”

Elijah didn't have a response for Lucy. Lucy came over and put a hand on his shoulder. “Elijah, go to your quarters, get some rest. Trust me, with time you will have all the answers you want. Just be patient.”

Elijah walked into his quarters. He lay down on his couch and stared at the ceiling. Patient? That was never his strong point. Even Cindy had pointed that out to him. But she had always pointed it out with a smile. He sighed. He found himself thinking about her a lot lately. He tried blaming it on the events that had been happening the past few months. But he wasn't sure.
